I think I'm one of the luckier people on that boat. I had actually talked with my mother and her husband about this policy, explaining by thoughts on it, and stressing that I think it's silly. They don't know my tastes, but I've admitted in the past that I do look up adulterated content to them, and that I don't feel bad about telling them. But still, this doesn't mean that anyone who feels in a pinch needs to confess to their parents, as you said, it's awkward, not only that, but it could possibly affect their childhood, and hamper their experience on the Internet.
