What makes it so good, I think, is player choice. I can get through fast, if I want to, by just playing the neccessary stuff. I also can take my time, visit multiple times, get the secrets etc. Mazes usually have dead ends that feel unfair, and the mapmaking gets in the way. Leaving denial to a random chance has its allure, too, but only if you have the time and stamina to put double or more effort in, or makes the experience abruptly too short.
