Torrent question

Post by Ditto »

Ok, wasn't sure if this was the best place to put this, seemed the only other option would be "All and everything", but whatever.
If this isn't the right place, please relocate.

I was just reading a bit when I came across this post elsewhere on Milvana, since I wanted to ask (technical) details on this, and didn't want to derail the existing thread, I figured I'd start a new thread to discuss just this.

wangchungass wrote:<snip> I use uTorrent for downloading but make sure you disable DHT and Peer exchange and set encryption.
I'm just curious, I did some reading and searching, but didn't find much to answer the "Why?" question.
That is, Why should DHT and Peer exchange be disabled.

Best I figured out so far:

DHT - Disable, as there is tracking information being passed around, so disable this to protect yourself a bit (?? probably incorrect).

Peer Exchange - Enable for slight better performance and reduce reliance on the central tracker. (Why would you disable this, it sounds good?)

I'm into computers professionally, but just not too familiar with these Torrents nowadays, so please, enlighten me!! I wish to understand!

Thanks!

You don't. People who don't know what they are talking about say to do that. You do not need to do anything like that unless what you are downloading is copyrighted. And not some indie-studio, it has to be a big studio. Small companies don't have the time/money to track and sue people who torrent.

If what you are doing is copyrighted, then use peerblock. Anyone who tells you that peerblock is useless and does nothing should be disregarded for they don't know what they are talking about.
MyFreeCams: Great free cam site! Lot of girls who love teasing!

Protip: Use https://mega.co.nz/ for uploads.
Won't need to upload it anywhere else because it doesn't have the shitty restrictions all the others have. Besides emp, some people like seeding there, so keep that.

Ditto what tbone said (sorry, I couldn't resist given the name of the creator of the thread is Ditto)!

Anyways, DHT and Peer Exchange are for people that want to increase download speeds of public trackers at the expense of security. Some mostly dead public trackers can be revived using them, but it is not worth it. If there is something you want that you can't find a good tracker for, then just buy it.
Use private trackers. Peerblock is a must.
