Have to say this the one of the reason i don't like Apple and don't use there products. Other big one is lack of support to the 3d gaming market and giving people flexibility.

But then working in this sector, i realize most people don't want the complexity of a normal PC, and if it does bare-bone tasks, then that is fine. Is funny when they are adamant it has things like a Core I7 though. Until the mass majority open there eyes to these things, the split will happen. People will move to linux, and developers etc will go Linux i think. Windows 8 has its issues.

I think you are missing the trend that products are moving away from boxes in the corner of the room on a desk. People are consuming their IT needs in different forms now. With the expanded abilities of Televisions and Mobile phones, and the increased markets in these areas, companies like Apple, Google and Microsoft are focusing more and more on handheld devices and less on ordinary PCs. Gaming is becoming more and more focused towards consoles and hand helds as well because this is where the companies can make the most gains. Hence the current intellectual property war that is raging between Apple and those who use the Android platform. The real money is going to be in mobile devices for the coming future, this is why Windows 8 has been aimed at touch screen devices. and Why Apple are in the strongest position to dominate the Market, and why they are aggressively perusing those who use their IP.

As for developers moving over to Linux? People have been saying this for years, I'm not sure there is the money to be made from such a switch. Until the vast majority of the public start using things like Linux, the companies will stick with the biggest market they can, be that Mac OS, Windows, iOS or Android. Linux maybe a developers dream and easy to work on, but it's nowhere near mainstream enough to be a powerhouse. Microsoft have had that market in their pocket way to long, and Apple and Google have the popularity and the bucks to ensure that it is they who are in line to challenge them, and not Linux.

the reason gaming consoles sell so well is they are a dedicated system.
But don't the manufacturers scream when someone finds a way to port another operating system.

Maybe i am missing the trend with the mass of people, but it seems to me your right in that people are going the way of mobile devices, but in the process are moving from a multitasking environment back to singular tasks, in a more graphically and limiting UI.

http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-2-forum/ ... ipad2.html

This is a example of what i mean. You can't remove a incorrect email put into the email client built into a Ipad. There is no fix other than to reset the device, or to load it up onto a Mac or PC to resolve the issue. What if in years time you don't have that PC or Mac. Backup your entire system and then reset it?

This is absolutely fine if this is what the consumer wants. My concern comes from the development side of things.

On a Windows, OS X, or Linux machine, you can use the applications you like, and even decide to create on the same system. With iOS and Android this really is not the case. Think of the freedom to try and develop games on a console and then a PC using a game engine. One is much more easily accessible. The other you need a lot of money to really begin to consider it.

Guess it comes down to what you want. Do the mass want no control, and be fed what the companies want, or do they want the control but will have to accept the added complexity and potential problems?

Ahh but there in lies the crux of the issue. People will WANT what the corporations tell them to WANT I think this is why many people are so put off by Apple, they are the embodiment of the capitalist system; A massive business, built on advertising and slick presentation. Aggressively protecting their assets, using cheap foreign labour to make their products and making massive profits in to the boot. Their monopolised iTunes and App store feeding their consumers what Apple want them to have and nothing else.
Capelaw wrote: Still, it's always good for those who love a whatever versus Apple thread, or look to validate their anti-Apple point-of-view. Personally I would have thought you buy what works best for you. There's plenty of reasons to avoid Google products too, and probably Microsoft.
I used to have a very anti apple point of view,I hated their polarised advertising campaigns "I'm a mac & I'm a PC" Don't tell me what I am!
I hated the way their users almost became cult like in their defence of the products. And more than anything I hated their smugness, it was as if they had all been brainwashed.

However I recently got an iPhone, and you know why, because it does what it claims it is able to do. I have had several smartphones which have claimed they are equal to the iphone, one Nokia and one Android, neither could get anywhere close to the ease of use, the quality feel or the speed at which the iphone does things. I considered a windows phone as an upgrade for a while but in the end decided to go with something that I knew was going to do what I wanted it to do. I still don't like the way they conduct business or the way they advertise their products, or the way Macfreaks go crazy for their products, but they do make a damn good phone.

Given that Steve Jobs based his leadership of Apple on the days he spent involved in new age cults in various hippie comunes, that's not that far off mark.

For a long time it was "Quark" Page layout software for design and publishing professionals.
that kept macs afloat.
Several companies I knew had macs for desktop publishing and graphics
Windows for everything else their business needed.

A lot of students wanted macs because their parents use windows.
This has happened in some ways to Nokia.

I mean they are great phones. It's just that with android or wp you can have like 95% of their functionality for less than 50% their price tag.

Trouble is I found that the 5% of the functionality missing on my android was the ability to make phone calls and send and receive texts *facepalm*

You should come out of the dungeon and get a better signal.
Or buy a voucher for more air time.
A phone contract is not the same as a contract found on this site.
Smacking a phone never yields the results you want.
