Chrome Incognito

Post by camipco »

So google has a new webbrowser. It's called "chrome" and it is superior in all sorts of ways. One of it's features is the ability to make "incognito" windows in which any browsing you do doesn't show up on your computer (far more effective than just deleting your history). For those of us on shared computers looking for privacy, I recommend it.

Also, it's awesome.

This is simply not true ;-)

Here you can check your own browser, compare it to others etc:

There is definitely not a perfect browser and also no superior browser. It always depends on the individual use. Don't tell me a Ferrari is a good family car :-P

OK.... a couple things..... I like the ferrari reference. And there are things about this browser, that, like any other when they first come out take a little getting used to. The incognito thing, I didn't even notice until campico posted this here. Thank you, i found it and it says it does what you say. That could be really cool. Thanks man.

You did read the fineprint concerning Chrome, did you?
Especially this part:
When you type URLs or queries in the address bar, the letters you type are sent to Google so the Suggest feature can automatically recommend terms or URLs you may be looking for. If you choose to share usage statistics with Google and you accept a suggested query or URL, Google Chrome will send that information to Google as well. You can disable this feature as explained here.
Note that the "you can disable this feature" part only applies to the 2nd sentence. Everything you type into the adress bar will be send to Google (together with the unique ID of your Chome Browser), no way around that, incognito mode or none. Some 'privacy' indeed.

Damn them for trying to improve their product by gathering usage statistics!

And a unique id of your browser doesn't mean they can connect that id to who you are, which makes it completely anonymous. If Google didn't collect this type of information it would be as crappy as the old search engines like Altavista.
