Regular video on Google Cardboard style headset

I've traditionally played Cock Hero on a laptop, but for reasons I won't get into I don't have a suitable PC at the moment. I do have an older Android phone with a relatively large display, though. If I bought a cheap Google Cardboard style headset to hold the phone, would I be able to use regular video and see the whole image or does that kind of setup require VR formatted video that automatically adjusts based on head position?
