[ScriptPlayer] Need some opinions on video playback controls

Post by Liquid »

Hi everyone!

I could use a couple of opinions on something for the upcoming version of ScriptPlayer. It would be a huge help if you could give me your opinions on this issue since don't want to introduce a "feature" that just doesn't feel right. I know I could just add another option to the settings dialog to enable/disable/configure this, but I want a good user experience right out of the box.

I usually expect videoplayers to have the following two features:
  • Toggle playback when I click the video
  • Toggle fullscreen when I double click the video.
The problem that comes with this is, that when you double click you pause/unpause a video shortly - which is not a huge problem but slightly annoying. YouTube solved this problem by apparently slightly delaying the play/pause commands to make sure it doesn't turn into a double-click. I just added this feature and have mixed feelings about this because a low delay requires you to always double-click quite quickly and a high delay (Windows default is half a second!) makes the delay very obvious when you single-click and almost makes it seem like a glitch rather than a feature.

Advantage: Double-clicking to go into/out of fullscreen mode feels a lot smoother and the video doesn't stutter. :-)
Disadvantage: Slight input-lag when pausing/unpausing via mouse. :-/

I currently settled for what feels like a good compromise but also leads to the video sometimes pausing when double-clicking slowly.
  • Do you use those click/double-click features?
  • How bad is the short pause/unpause stutter - especially when watching porn, not regular vids?
  • Is it more/less annoying than apparent input-lag?
  • Do you like how YouTube handles this?
  • Is the delay on YouTube too high?
Thanks,
L 8-)

Still way too poor to afford fancy devices like those.
Maybe I will have a look at it and give you feedback on the interface of the program...
...But you have no download link. XD

Still the same ;-)

The downloadable version however doesn't include the mentioned feature yet, that's why I didn't include a link. Just looking for some general opinions on that topic.

I haven't tried your player yet, but featurewise, I think that the double-click feature to go fullscreen is excellent, and kind of standard found in other players (so intuitive as well). I think that it should have priority over the pause feature (if both are proposed). So, I wouldn't mind the delay for the mouse-click pause feature.

That being said, I think that the pause feature should be keyboard activated using the spacebar. It's much easier to reach than the mouse, and you can pause the video immediatly. Several players use the spacebar as the pause feature.

I love scriptplayer. I have noticed that pause issue and would love the delay. I have started using space bar for pausing/unpausing most of the time.
