Recent Downtime (March 23rd - 25th)

Post by seraph0x »

Hey guys,

Milovana was down for a couple days just now. This was due to an issue with our main server. It was a pretty unfortunate combination of factors that ultimately caused this downtime to be unusually long. Firstly the site went down on a Saturday, right after the end of business hours. Secondly, the site went down a few days before a major deadline for me. Thirdly, the KVM - a hardware device that normally allows me to fix many types of server issues myself - was not functioning.

Because of this, I decided to put in a ticket and just wait it out for our host to fix the server on Monday at the start of business. It would have been possible to alert standby engineers via phone or move the site to another server for the weekend, but both of these solutions would have taken a lot of time which I just didn't have this weekend. As many of you know Milovana is a net cash drain, so it being offline actually saves me both money and time (in addition of the time I saved by not working on the issue itself), so given the situation I made the call to just "take the weekend off" so to speak.

Hope you guys can forgive me, this type of thing should remain a rare occurrence. :-)

Cheers,

Seraph0x

No problem, you provide an excellent service for free, thank you fit everything!

If anyone has a problem, consider it a couple days of denial lol.

The good that comes from this website over the years I've known it far outweighs the minor tribulations. Thanks for keeping things running. I would miss this place if it ever went under. Thank you for the site and the good things it brings to lonely people like me.

The service provided FAR outweighs any minor inconvenience. Thanks for all you do!

As I've stated before, I would be glad to contribute to the effort$$, if that's possible, and no disrespect intended.

Thanks and great to have Milovana back

Great to have the site back and running. :-)

I'd be great to have some kind of a system to inform users/members about the cause any
downtime, maintenance or failure of the site and the time I'd take for it to be back, but I
realize that this is most probably not possible without the site running in the first place
(I'm no IT expert).

And it is true that many of the site regulars do become worried and anxious any and
every time the site goes offline as it is truly a great site and two thumbs up for all the work
and effort that goes into keeping the free site running year after year.

I'm sure you're doing your very best and there is absolutely no reason to complain about a few
days of downtime every now and then.

Cheers.

I don't think we would be too discouraged if you took Milovana off site once a week, to save money. But we would all like a bit of forewarning.
just my two bits.

The Problem here is that it's really hard to plan a server crash

@Seraphox
I really appreciate what you are doing for us. Please keep up the good work :clap2:

Three cheers for Milovana and seraph0x! The site came back online before the withdrawal symptoms got very bad, but they were there. I would like to express my deep gratitude to seraph0x.

Thank You for all your efforts -- since the beginning, this site has been a great community, mostly noise-free, and it's neat to see it evolve over time. Even if there are a few hiccups along the way, that's a small 'price' to pay for seeing this community continue on.

Though this gets me thinking about putting up the 'Milovana Downtime Tease' --- for every hour the site is down, one must edge. After 6 hours, every other edge is a ruined orgasm. This will remind folks what they're missing and remind them that "it could always be worse." *ducks*
