Dump the Flash Teases

Do you think Milovana.com is perfect in every way? Hopefully not, so what can we do to improve? Every idea, suggestion or criticism is highly appreciated.

Dump the Flash Teases

Post by happyclamm »

PLEASE dump the flash teases...they don't work worth squat and the content is dreadfully boring! Who wants to look at the same picture over and over again or see the same picture for 10 minutes while some lame "instructions" SLOWLY flash on the screen?

Also PLEASE DUMP the Tila Tequila garbage!!!!! She's TOTALLY overexposed and not even that hot!

I disagree. I think there are good and bad flash teases, same as the normal style teases. Im not hugely impressed with the Tila Tequila set, but I dont think thats because of problems inherent in flash teases - they would have been bad in standard format as well.

On that subject though, and Im sure this has been mentioned before, I would love to see voting on the flash teases.

I agree, voting on flash teases is a very good idea.

I still think they're a waste of disc space!

I still think the Tila Tequila series is one of the dumbest concepts in a looooooooooooooooooooooooong time!

different strokes for different folks eh?
I would say you can avoid the flash teases by noticing the little F on the corner of the tease. The argument that this isn't worth disc space is rather irrelevant to you, I see the non-flash teases are being put up as well as the flash ones. my 2cp anyways.

If you don't like them, don't look at them. And don't worry about the diskspace, which they are supposedly wasting. I'm sure seraph0x got that covered...

If we took down every tease that someone didn't like - or even that 10% of the userbase disliked - there would be zero content on this site. Sexuality is highly individualized and the last thing any of us should be doing is making judgments about who has 'correct' perceptions of what teases are 'good'.

It's not disk space that's a concern, either, I'd imagine. Bandwith tends to be the killer, which is why I remain impressed that flash teases exist at all.

I'd like to shake your hand, smile, and say "Hey, I was you once! Merry Fucking Christmas!" :-) Until you can read that previous sentence without wanting to slap me, I'd caution you against remarks like someone's work is a waste of disk space. It makes you come off as someone saying "me me meeeee and who cares what others want!"

There are possibly hundreds of aspects of this fetish that I wouldn't find interesting yet you would, and vice versa. I'm sure a few ideas that neither of us have even considered are going to present themselves on this site, and it wouldn't surprise me if some of these early flash teases will spark it all off.

There is rarely... arguably never... a new idea. Most of the time, what we think of as new ideas are packaging a few ideas and pieces of knowledge in a new way. Translated: It's really hard to build something really really awesome when you haven't seen a lot of awesome before, and this flash stuff is new to most.

Yes, some of the features feel forced/akward right now, as I'd have predicted, the way some people over-use any technology at first (e.g. IM) even when in some cases the previous ways (e.g. phone or email) might remain much more appropriate. Often this isn't a way of showing off, or poor judgment, it's about intentionally trying it out and learning where it fits. Wanting to take this new toy away because you want to force tease authors to use a different way regardless of what they want is, well, probably even more insulting than you meant it.

Also, keep in mind that the Nyx help hasn't been fleshed out and published yet too, so the number of people who
- have even heard of milovana.com AND
- have enough raw data to really push Nyx AND
- have programming skill AND
- have writing skill for a great tease AND
- are the type to use the tool to tell a great story rather than the opposite AND
- have the time AND
- want to do it
... is maybe even as small as you think it is. ... so far, anyway.

Off the top of my head... things that can be done with Nyx today that haven't been explored fully if at all:
- Asking "Do you have a shoelace?" or any other questions like "have you been here before?" and then adjust the tease accordingly.
- Several (i.e. more than two) outcomes, or other use of the random function (rather than clicking buttons) to affect the plot.
- Writing the tease to notice when you're cheating and going through the motions.
- A hello page that says "Note from the author: Require x, y, z, and you may want to skip this tease."
- A hello page that gives various "jump" points, like a DVD, so you start from the beginning or just skip to your favorite scenes.

That's just with today's mostly undocumented features. Keep in mind that most of the upcoming features will add new dimensions, rather than merely extend it, since authors will be able to mix and match in ways that even Seraph0x might not expect.

And all of it might serve to make the non-flash teases even better than they are, in the same way that learning other languages can make you better at your primary language.

So rejoice, have patience, and again I say Merry Fucking Christmas, even if a day or two late.

Nothing like an old fashioned exchange of ideas to ring in the new year...

I'm not dissing anyone's hard work or any of that...they're just not as good...GENERALLY SPEAKING.

I'll just skip the flash teases since they're not worth my time...anyone who wants to waste their time has that prerogative.

Ahem.
You want an exchange of ideas? Get off your trip and stop being condescending.
I'm kind of surprised your posts got treated so lightly, to be honest. Had I been working on a flashtease, or if I were (for example) submatt, who's teases you've gone out of your way to lambaste, I wouldn't have been so gentle.

Stop being such a jerk, stop personally attacking the work someone has done because you don't like it.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but positive feedback would be appreciated.

So, for a comparison I searched for happyclamm teases to see how he writes. Oh that's right.... he hasn't written any.

*People fighting, smashing in each others heads*

Umm...

*A chair flies across the room*

... can I say something?

First off. I think happyclamm was perfectly polite and he does have a point. So let's take this thread seriously and look at the issue. (Btw I think it deserves a mention how civilized this thread has been going. Made me proud. Please keep it up. )

With every new technology there is always a leap of faith involved at some point. The FlashTeases aren't important so much for what they are, but for what they may become. I'm not saying you have to hang on to failed ideas forever, but come on: we just launched! There is much room for improvement, yes, but there is also a clear road and no doubt in my mind that we will be able to make those improvements over the next few months. And I mean both the technical problems and the authors getting more skilled with the new medium.

No post from me would be complete without a nice example to support my position and boy, I got just the thing. I bet when Matt Groening showed around the first picture of the Simpsons, very few people would have expected this crap to turn into one of the most successful merchandises ever. :-P

Granted the FlashTeases will have a hard time beating the Simpsons in terms of popularity, but hey, fuck it, who knows? Either way, I think it's moot to speculate. Maybe they will be successful, maybe not. Why not just wait and see?

I want to say one thing though: Personally I have a thick skin when it comes to criticism, so don't hold back on Nyx, the viewer or the idea of FlashTeases in general. But please honor the effort that our early authors are putting in. There is not much glory in adopting such a technology before everyone else, but they are making important experiences for all the FlashTeases yet to come. Thanks. So. Much.

PS: If you really want to turn off the FlashTeases for the time being, I'm working on it.

I just wasted 5 minutes of my life that I'll never get back reading your dribble.

It is nice to have a variety of teases that hopefully appeal to everyone at some point in time. I suggest making your own teases if you have a problem with it. As of today a search for teases that you've done comes up with:

"Teases

Sorry, no teases found!"

So zip it :-)

If you've never built a car you can't call a crummy one a lemon?

If you've never fixed your leaking pipes you can't complain about a lousy plumber?

The problem that you're having is rather simple. It's not the flash tease that bores you, it's the content of the tease. Most likely there's a post about each tease in "The Art of Webteasing". Go there, leave a post saying that you think their tease is boring. Then, why not give suggestions to improve it.

Right now 2/3's of all flash teases are done by submatt, which compromises 10/15 of them. 7 of these are the Tila series. Wait for it. Maybe more and more authors are going to try it out, make something original with it.

I've got an epic tease story that I'm working on and probably won't finish for a long time, but it wouldn't be possible to correctly convey without the flash engine.

And personally, there are times when a couple dozen teases are made and I find I don't like any of them. I was almost tempted to work harder on my own. Luckily video games put a stop to that. :-D
