Here are a few ideas that I did not see in the rest of the thread:

I realize that this game is probably over, but I have one idea which I didn't see anywhere in here. Some people have ideas where he has to earn a release, and others make it depend on a roll of the die or other games of luck. But I think it would be best to combine the two. My favorite would be backgammon, because it involves enough skill so that win or lose, he feels he deserves his fate, but also enough luck so that he cannot win them all.

In its simplest form, I would suggest getting out the backgammon board when it is time that he might be able to come, and play one game. If he loses, then the number of checkers he has left on the board is the number of days until he can try again.
