Are men kinkier than women ?

Post by Human »

Are men kinkier than women ? Women consume less porn than men presumably because they are not as visually oriented. But it seems that they are present in far fewer numbers on other outlets such as this forum. I have also been led to believe that women have as much of a sex drive as men. Is that false ? And/Or do women have far fewer fetishes than men ?

It's actually a fairly common myth that has it's roots buried deep into western culture. A woman's sexuality in western culture went through a long phase of repression. For example: the Victorian era. Indoctrination suggested that a "good girl" didn't and shouldn't like sex. This sort of thought is quite old fashioned and the women's revolution in the 60's and 70's pretty much threw those things out, but many girls still grew up with those teachings. It takes some time and probably a few generations to move past that sort of thing.

That said: Women have come a long way since then and more recent research has shown that women think about and like sex as much as men do. The difference seems to be in what turns them on and depending on what you consider kinky...women seem to be kinkier than men. The consumtion of porn isn't a very good way to measure that sort of thing as most porn is made by and for men anyway, but the point about women being less visual also seems to hold true. A woman's stimulation generally seems to be far more of a mental thing than for men. Try reading some of the stories that women write, read, and like. You'll find that they're pretty erotic, but don't generally focus as much on visual elements like men's porn does. Even those cheesy romance novels can get pretty steamy at times.

The point is, women don't seem to need an explicit picture to focus on. They generate it in their own minds and apparently better than we do.

As for fetishes...I haven't seen any specific research on the subject, but I'd bet that the female tastes are just as wide and varied as ours.

I seem to remember reading a study comparing the sexual response to visual stimuli between men and women. Basically, each person was shown various different sex acts. (Man/Man, Man/Woman, Women/Women, etc. One interesting addition was that of photos of Bonobos having sex.)

Much to the surprise of the researches, (men are generally perceived as being more visual) women experienced the highest levels of arousal to the largest amount of topics. Even the one's of the Bonobos produced a response. (This was done with sensors to indicate arousal.)

Found the study, http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/25/magaz ... ire-t.html

Here's the relevent excert:
The men, on average, responded genitally in what Chivers terms “category specific” ways. Males who identified themselves as straight swelled while gazing at heterosexual or lesbian sex and while watching the masturbating and exercising women. They were mostly unmoved when the screen displayed only men. Gay males were aroused in the opposite categorical pattern. Any expectation that the animal sex would speak to something primitive within the men seemed to be mistaken; neither straights nor gays were stirred by the bonobos. And for the male participants, the subjective ratings on the keypad matched the readings of the plethysmograph. The men’s minds and genitals were in agreement.

All was different with the women. No matter what their self-proclaimed sexual orientation, they showed, on the whole, strong and swift genital arousal when the screen offered men with men, women with women and women with men. They responded objectively much more to the exercising woman than to the strolling man, and their blood flow rose quickly — and markedly, though to a lesser degree than during all the human scenes except the footage of the ambling, strapping man — as they watched the apes. And with the women, especially the straight women, mind and genitals seemed scarcely to belong to the same person. The readings from the plethysmograph and the keypad weren’t in much accord. During shots of lesbian coupling, heterosexual women reported less excitement than their vaginas indicated; watching gay men, they reported a great deal less; and viewing heterosexual intercourse, they reported much more. Among the lesbian volunteers, the two readings converged when women appeared on the screen. But when the films featured only men, the lesbians reported less engagement than the plethysmograph recorded. Whether straight or gay, the women claimed almost no arousal whatsoever while staring at the bonobos.

I bet that was an awkward conversation...the woman explaining how she's not turned on by bonobos and the doctor telling her the machines say otherwise ;)

I would take that to mean that the repression I spoke of earlier isn't quite gone yet. These women were apparently reporting what they thought they were supposed to like, not necessarily what they really do.

Possibly, (I'm quite confident that "repression" still exists in some sectors) but that seems like a too simplistic explanation. The fact that women on the whole were aroused by a wider breadth of things physically then they were mentally seems to speak more of the difference between purely physical/subconscious arousal and mental/conscious arousal.

Also quite possible.

That they're not quite as boiterous about their preferences as we are?
That they're not more shy and reserved than we are?

Just a few possibilities. Could be any number of reasons really, but I don't think their lack of participation on an internet board indicates a general lack of kinkiness.

I think boys and young men around my age brought up in the age of the internet are far more likely to develop fetishes and find arousal and interest in various kinky practices far more then women simply due to the fact that internet sexual material in general is geared towards men. Sitting at home being on the computer I would equally consider something more likely boys//men do compared to women. The more you search for sexual gratification the more you come across more explicit and extreme material and curiosity develops into interest which can lead into fascination association and dependance and it becomes habitual and the internet speeds this process along.

As to whether men or women are innately more "into kink" I would say it is equal and as it's been pointed out the sexual repression of women goes back centuries but now it is becoming so that girls//women are just as able to be open about their sexuality as men.

I would like to say women though for my own kinky purposes ;)

I personally don't believe it has anything to do with gender but more with the individual. I am more kinky them some males....there are some males that are kinkier than Me.......

As for the sex drive and the fetishes............again....I think it's all about the person...not the gender. *smile*
Am I here for Y/your entertainment........................... Or are Y/you here for Mine?

Please take this kindly.

I am having trouble putting my thoughts together in a concise and "pleasant way".

As men go hunting for sex and the "naughty women" lay in wait.

Could this have a bearing on the premise of this discussion.

I believe many men love to be lead by a female
(I do)

But spout their prowess, to appear manly
and not pussy whipped or weak.
perhaps.
Peccadilloes this word may be too strong
Kink is not right either
