So, what about that chat?

The chat broke today for the umpteenth time and I'm getting tired of spending the little time I have for Milovana on this one feature. The webtease section has currently about 11000 unique visitors per day, the chat has maybe 30-100 visitors per day.

What do y'all think? Are you using the chat? Would you miss it? If we do bring it back would you be sad if we dropped IRC support? (Without the IRC integration it might be a bit less work to maintain.)

Maybe we should advertise the chat in some way.

I mean with webteases the visitors know exactly what they are getting (or not ).
When you're joining the chat you might end up with boring hours of people coming and going all the time.

There are no scheduled activities or anything yet. And also IRC is a pretty ancient system ( I love it though, but many people might be more interested in A/V chat), even "gabbly" seemed to be more used, since it was 1 click and chat.

I think we should keep the chat and maybe found a group that would add some life to it. I know it's probably not easy, because were all from different timezones, but the chat could really bring even more life to milovana. Just Imagine Miss Jay moving her activities to the chat would probably make a huge difference ;), for example.

So, if we had chat activities we could probably advertise them in brackets in the menu bar. Like "Chat (Activity: Teasing time..)" ...

Another thing that I've seen in other communities that works is a List of "people using the chat right now", somewhere on the mainpage or the forum-index.

Those are just some conceptions, I hope that the chat will stay =).

I love the chat. I also use IRC a lot. Green mentioned some great points and there are other ways to grow the chan. While we're on this topic. those who always find the chan dead are the same ones killing it :/ Please bring it back.

I still like the idea I had a couple of years ago... see if OD would like us to advertise their chat, and they advertise creating teases over on Milo. OD's chat has video and audio capabilities, then the admins here wouldn't have to troubleshoot anything.

Consolidating this way would:
1 - Have a central place for both sites' users to congregate
2 - Push more people back to milo to create and read webteases

Then both sites' admins could have more free time.

i like brians idea, i thought it was a server problem my end, and i've missed the chat - i think that if more people used it initially, it would become incredibly popular in itself. I dont mind what platform it uses [irc or whatever] but i think it would be a knock to the site if it was lost completely

This is somewhat of a tangent but people do NOT follow instructions when doing teases @_@ I had purposely integrated the chan into my tease but I recall only one person who followed that instruction.

I'm failing to see the logic behind that point. If it's always dead when they go in there, exactly how is that their fault?

For me, I'm one of the people who always finds it dead. Although, not really through anyone's fault. I just keep strange hours so there's generally not a lot of people even awake when I am, much less on Milo chatting away. Just bad timing on my part, but sometimes life comes first.

I think, if you want to keep it, the idea of having some sort of planned events, group discussions, whatever, is the way to go. Just my opinion. People are more likely to become involved if they can plan a little ahead and know when something's going to be going on there.

What is the purpose of the Chat on Milovana?

Is it to find mistresses? because those are rare times.
I mean what are we supposed to talk about?

I know Miss Jay's been asked this a lot, and she has dabbled in the chat room a few times, but there are some major downfalls of the chatroom that put her off (and me for that matter!).

Firstly, there's rarely anyone there, and on the occasions when I've been in and there are some guys present, everyone seems to avoid conversation until a lady enters the room.

Secondly, when I have seen a lady enter the room, they're pretty often hounded for attention. The forums offer a bit more etiquette and decorum, probably because you need a registered account and can be held responsible for comments. In the chat room you can sign in as whoever you like, act however you like, and pretty much get away with it. Bad behaviour on this site in general has put a lot of the ladies off in the past, and it's not likely to be a problem that will go away.

The timezone issue is pretty relevant for us over here in the UK (Miss Jay included!), as a lot of users are from abroad, so it's not easy to synchronise times without the scheduling sessions. But why go to the trouble when the forums do as good a job and avoid the timezone problem? There's always MSN etc for chatting (as some of Miss Jay's good pets will be aware).

I'd probably use it more often if it was a bit busier I guess, and I know Miss Jay did have some plans to inject some life into it, but I don't think it would be awfully missed on my part if it saves the admins some work.

I'd be ok with that idea, but since we're quite a bit bigger and the Chat is a main menu item on our end, they would have to also feature us prominently to make this a fair deal. Feel free to contact them and find out what they think of your plan.

Indigo has also offered to help and I'm now talking to him to see if he can help us create a new chat that doesn't require as much maintenance.

Based on the response I'm getting I see that there are a dedicated few who really want to keep the chat alive and I'm going to do what I can to support them. If you look at the suggestion forum, it's full of excellent ideas that have been waiting for their realization for months, even years. If I have to let go of the chat to focus on these improvements to our main section, it'll be a no brainer.

What it comes down to is whether we find a way to have a chat without putting too much effort into it and I think the two ideas above are very promising in that regard.

I really hope that the chatroom is fixed soon, not only am i suffering the frustration of complying to the instructions of my Mistress, the time between instructions may become even more unbearable if the chatrtoom isnt restored.
