I don't mean to speak for Miss Jay, but as I understand it people are welcome to participate in the challenges as a one-off without submitting themselves to her tender mercies indefinitely. That's just an added option for the really dedicated.
My impression is that those who participate on a regular basis soon find themselves convinced to commit for the long haul, and those that do (as identified by the forum signatures you noticed) are duly rewarded with additional attentions, private instructions and so forth.
