Hi Electro,
The silicone sealant actually is safe for contact with food so I think it's probably pretty safe as well as the Aqueon silicone aquarium sealant which is 100% safe for aquarium fish. But I took your advice, looked into Platinum Cure Silicone Rubber, and found several products that look interesting which I ordered. The basic difference I see is that the Platinum version is a 2 part mix, so it's more of an effort to use than the single-type sealant that requires no mixing, and is more expensive too. It's also supposed to be safer to use, so I'll try it out on my next design and see how well it works out.
