What is Edge Hero JAV Odyssey?

Maybe I missed something, but I still haven't understood what the points are for.
The Number one reason for the points was so that people feel comfortable making a small mistake like reaching the edge when they're not supposed to. Instead of "losing" you lose a point that you can gain back. By the end, as long as you have 1 point you win, but I was hoping that people would feel compelled to shoot for high points and perhaps even replay to beat their high score.
