Virus and Malware Software Recommendations

Post by Hopper725 »

So I am a Mac user. I recently bought a windows 10 machine so I could take advantage of some of the special software needed for things like the handy and hopefully the OSR2. I am hoping some of you would share your best options for protecting my new machine from virus and other nasty stuff out there in the wild. I am not super computer savvy so please be patient.
I’d eventually like to start scripting but I have a lot to learn. Thanks in advance and hopefully I can soon become a contributing member of the group.

Malwarebytes the best antivirus in my opinion...some features require paid version...u can do basic or deep scan in trial version

I recommend Comodo Antivirus. I am using free version on my computers and many of my friends using it too. For the time using it i have never get a virus or malware. Also it uses not much system resourses.

Basically what Kiranico said.
Keep your Windows updated and stay away from shady websites and don't open every E-Mail attachment you receive.
That way you have minimal risk of catching a nasty virus in the first place and if you come into contact with one Windows 10 is capable to defend itself nowadays.
Every time I came across an infected PC the Virus was able to bypass the additional AntiVirus anyway.

Safe the money and time it takes to install one to strengthen the biggest weak point your Computer has, you.
Read up on how to identify phishing mail (This is a good idea regardless of the OS you use) and only install software from trusted sources.

I did quite a bit of research a about a year ago and ended up reverting to Windows Defender plus Malwarebytes Premium, which was a combo recommended by people who know a lot more about security than I do. Many said Windows Defender alone is fine, but I do get website warnings from Malwarebytes, which is helpful. I discontinued McAfee, it was a resource hog. BTW, I visit a lot of "shady" websites looking for content, but I haven't encountered any issues - AFIAK

Between windows defender and your browser with script, tracking, and adblock add-ons, you're going to be pretty safe with common sense. Don't click ads, don't open strange attachments, don't open spam emails, don't head to the shadier places online.

firefox set up to block trackers and such - with HTTPS Everywhere, Privacy Badger, an ad blocker (uBlock Origin unless someone has better), and Disconnect for Facebook will give you an above-average level of security on the browsing side. Backed up with updated Defender and you're fine.
