Would I be putting myself at risk by creating an account there? I've always been curious about that site, but I don't know where to go to get more information. I feel like it's playing with fire. Can someone educate me about Empornium?
Empornium's OK by me. Its interface and web pages are rather klunky, in fact. I don't think they have a lot of overhead for people to create fancy-schmancy web-six-point-oh style graphix, just a buncha volunteers. It's safe to participate, or, as "safe" as any other internet porn-sharing zone would be, in my opinion. If you're worried, keep in mind that the Feds probably already know your name and shoe size so it's just a question of when they come to arrest you for something you didn't mean to do anyway.
Empornium works with the usual private torrent-tracker protocols. Each of these services, including Empornium, is simply a clearing-house for (mostly new, user-made) torrent files (but does not host the actual video or audio DATA files which their torrents will point to), and then the website is also intelligent enough to record how much you UPload versus how much you DOWNload of all those torrents that you got from them. So long as your torrent client is connected properly, which is usually only a minor consideration, then your Up-versus-Down has to remain within range of a certain (rather variable) "Empornium ratio", generally roughly twice as much of the DOWN as of the UP (meaning, for example, if you and your torrent client have over the course of your membership UPloaded 100 Gb worth of data by means of all your Empornium torrents to all the other Empornium members on the internet anywhere via their properly connected torrent clients, then you will be allowed to have a grand total DOWNload maximum 200 Gb without invoking a penalty, with some caveats and variations). If you do get an Empornium account, make sure you don't start out by just going hawg-wild with the DOWNloads or you'll run out of "ratio" and then it will be hard to re-establish your download privileges. Unless you pay money for the privilege, of course ...
However, I suspect that you won't be getting an Empornium account. They've restricted themselves to zero new memberships, and have been restricted like that for the better part of a year now, as far as I remember.
