oh this isn't IRC... this is XMPP.. but i don't think the protocol is the issue.. i think it's the configuration of the server. it can't be the load, the chat doesn't see enough traffic for it to be a bonafide traffic problem.

i run ejabberd (a XMPP server software) on my own server nonstop for the past few months without issues.
