Has this been posted before but I missed it?

See also this extract in the wikipedia page for pornhub:
Researcher Conrad Longmore claims that advertisements displayed by the sites were found to contain malware programs, which install harmful files on users' machines without their permission. Mr Longmore told the BBC that two popular sites – XHamster and PornHub – pose the greatest threat.

It has always been true that sex sites freely give away malicious surprises

My advice is that you must peruse the Internet while as a limited user.

Never as an ADMINISTRATOR

Windows is the main culprit as it makes an administrator account the default account when first set up.

I would also advise that a work computer and a PORN/internet computer be separate machines

Chrome+Adblock >settings > advanced settings> content settings> disallow 3rd party cookies

and plugins> click to play

Warning: this will stop some sites from functioning properly like youtube comments as its uses a different domain name to store comments on.

So you will need to allow some 3rd party cookies through by clicking the icon in the address bar to get youtube working properly :p

We are no longer all together as one but separate mental patients, that yearn to be ejected out of this poisoned atmosphere to a warm bed and a friendly therapist.

Use firefox, a good firewall and antivirus (thats not norton).
In firefox: ctrl+shift+a / plugins
Make sure flash is up-to-date and that java is either disabled or "ask to activate"

And last but not least, use common sense. Don't download crap, install crap etc.
A computer in the right hands can safely browse these pages and others. A computer in the hands of someone who doesn't know what there doing is a disaster bound to happen.

Additionally there are plugins to completely disable advertisement on certain pages. Do however note that pages providing you with free content only do this because they make money from the advertisement.

There's no inherit security in using OSX contrary to Les's statement. While there is more Windows malware out there, OSX has more than been catching up or exceeding it in recent years. It's not a small target anymore, and so assuming security simply from it is a poor idea.

The suggestion of an old PC and Linux isn't a bad one, but isn't very useful to those with one computer or only wanting to carry / maintain one. The easiest solution would be a Live CD/USB that essentially resets itself to the same settings every time you boot it. Knoppix and Ubuntu Linux are two very common OSes that make it very easy to make this. If you're worried about malware/internet history/etc it's not a bad way to go. You can also look into portable apps, which are set for running from a USB drive, and designed to have less permissions from the get go, so that they don't allow as much through.
