IRC = Internet Relay Chat, one of the Internet's oldest chat protocols.
What are the advantages to this? IRC, as opposed to Gabby, allows for moderators (called "channel operators" or "ops" for short). We would finally be able to get rid of the people who come right into Chat and ask the first woman they see if she'll be their Mistress. I'm sure the women and most of the guys would appreciate if that were cracked down upon. And drama could be kept under control as well. Finally someone could say "take your personal problems to PMs," because IRC allows for private messaging.
We could have a channel set up on an IRC server AND still allow people to connect from their browsers, using a Java IRC chat program (of which there are many free ones that integrate with websites). This way people who already use IRC won't have to open a new window just to chat, while everyone else can keep doing the same thing they were doing.
tl;dr: We should switch to IRC so chat sucks less

For the site owners' purposes, here is a link to a popular Java web client for IRC:

Re: An IRC-based chat
Take a look at this thread: http://www.milovana.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1616
Seraph0x was obviously in favor of the non-IRC based simply because of its ease of use and easy integration with the site. Key words being easy, but nothing wrong with that.
And a poll was made that makes it seem the community pretty much favors a non-IRC based chat. However, I doubt more than half of them probably don't even know what IRC is and many mentions of good IRC features are excluded. End result: users would rather "stick with what works," which didn't make it a very fair poll.
But from what I've heard, there is some work going on with an IRC chat as it is.

Re: An IRC-based chat
If this is relevant, I wrote an IRC bot in PHP for easy integration with websites. It's not too bad. It can display a list on the site of who is in the room, what they are saying, etc. Paired with CGI-IRC it makes for a decent IRC-based web chat.
If anyone is interested PM me and I'll give you the code.
