Don't know about making one, but carrots can work.
Obviously be careful and safe if you're going to try it. Wash it and probably use a condom if you can find one that fits it well, also try to find the least pointy ones. One benefit other than being cheap is that if the carrot is thick enough it can be turned into a buttplug.
But of course the best and safest option would be a real dlido.
