Copyright fears, uncertainty, and doubt seem to arise in many conversations at Milovana. For context, this community is in the same arena as those that generate Anime Music Videos (and the latest fad, Pony Music Videos), with the added consideration of mature content. There are an abundance of lawyers and academics that have weighed in on the status of the other community's content as it relates to the fair use defense, liability, and practical concerns (at least as it relates to the United States).

Active promotion of the genre to recruit those most capable of creating videos would not be illegal if done by users. The site itself through acting on its policies has a strong DMCA safe harbor defense, such that actions/content provided by its users is ever argued to have committed or encouraged infringement would not transfer liability to it.

Artists creating videos however do carry a risk that they could be extorted (pushed to a settlement, prior to any effective opportunity for defense), if there is an interest hired to act on part of a copyright holder for financial gain. It's their judgement call on degree of exposure to this risk after being attracted to the community - those seeking their involvement would not carry weight of liability in this individual judgement.

Same here...
Lately I've had the idea that if an animated beat meter is too much effort, a static image of a stanza/bar like framework might be a good idea. It would also add a little more structure for people who like to make their beats drift... (E.g. a "1-12" is actually "1-12-" or 5/8ths of a measure, so it rolls really awkwardly through multiple measures.)

For example, a 1-2-345 would look like this (if you can imagine a graphic of 8 boxes in a row):

Code: Select all

 ================|X| |X| |X|X|X| |================
I think anything over a 16-box repetition is a little complex, but I can't think of many videos with patterns that would require more than that.

-- Ah ha, here's an image from wikipedia that sort of backs up what I was thinking. The bottom half of this image is about right:

We're not dealing with any pitch or duration aspects, only timings, so I think it would work really well as an alternative to an animated "Hero"-game style ticker. The representation is called a "Clave" pattern.

I really should have said this on a different post. For one, it's an afterthought that I didn't fully develop, but it's also pedantic and doesn't have a lot to do with CH itself. It's just a pet peeve of mine.

I hadn't thought of it that way. Makes sense.

This is more like what I was getting at. The text designations can be ambiguous at times (for example, how is "1-1" different from "1-2"?). If there's a more complex beat, the numeral/dash system just can't handle the reality of the music. Since I learned how to read music when I was young, I just can't help but count the beats in my head like a piano teacher would. But I digress, because this is DEFINITELY NOT the innovation that will make or break the Cock Hero genre.
