I'm just rendering my new CH, the Onepiece, and already from the name you can tell, that there are pretty much no breaks. I've done that, because breaks between rounds are really boring in my opinion. They take away from the experience, break down the excitement for what comes next.
So for me, it's no breaks (or hardly noticeable breaks). :)

Personally, the first couple of rounds a break isn't needed, but on some of the longer or more intense videos especially, they are nigh on impossible to complete without a short break.
Also they don't have to be boring, sure a black screen is just crap but if you're right up to the edge and maybe the break coincides with a really sexy clip, the hands off can be unbearable.
The break could also function as a tease mechanism, like "oh I bet you can't guess what's coming next stroker boy" etc.
These are just my two cents anyway, I'm sure other people have differing opinions.

I like to see some breaks. Helps me to build up tension. To me, a CH without any breaks or "game-changers" is just another compilation. I really like how its done in some of the older vids where you are told xx:xx 'till next break....
Of course it can be/is more challenging having no breaks at all but looking forward to whats comimg after a break is nice too....

I like shorter breaks for medium intensity CHs. 15-20 seconds, maybe, and then mostly between the tougher rounds.
Really intense videos like YOLO, Fail, Hardcore, Cum Challenge, etc. need breaks. 30 seconds, tops. Like others have said, the break doesn't have to be boring. The vids that give you an option to break or stroke during the break are great. Don't want to be bored? Then keep stroking.

I'm with the pro-break lobby on this one. I think drdd2000 has it just about perfect - 30 seconds is needed for intense CH vids but shorter is ok for "normal" ones. There are some older vids (can't remember names for now) which had the easy option of enjoying the break or harder one of stroking to the beat. Maybe that's a nice compromise you could resurrect?
I'm also a fan of creative use of breaks, with good tease style text. I was a fan of the two voices (pink trying to make you fail, yellow helping) and that system being used to mess with the structure of having breaks etc. forcing you into stroking more than you expected when you thought it was break time for example. Those 2 voices, or at least one female voice that challenges you, is a key aspect of some of the best early Cock Heros in my opinion.

Early on, the breaks aren't so important but some of the best CH experiences are when it's near the end, and I'm desperately trying not to lose it... and then "saved by the bell!"
Also, they're a good time to re-lube if you need to.

I hate breaks. If I screw up, it's usually in the first minute after a break.
The short break to cool down just somehow makes me more vulnerable to losing it afterwards .
So .. if you want to make it "harder" - yeah, keep breaks. (I know, weird, eh? :) )

That being said, I don't mind no breaks, but if a break is in there, 30 sec is more than enough.

Pretty much read my mind. Implied in this is a fourth rule...do not pause your video player.

Maybe ask the player to keep track of how many breaks were needed, or how long a break we needed, and then have a penalty or reward later on depending on how much break time we used. Just an idea.
