xhamster and pornhub malvertising warning

Post by _bobby_ »

Anyone visiting the above two sites might want to keep their computers up to date...
to quote the BBC...

The data showed that xhamster.com - listed by monitoring firm Alexa as the 46th most popular site on the internet - had malvertising on 1,067 out of 20,986 pages (5%) screened in the past 90 days.

According to Alexa's statistics, the average user of xhamster.com would look at 10.3 individual pages - meaning a potential 42% risk of stumbling across harmful adverts in each viewing session.

Firefox with adblock and flashblock, combined with 100% up to date versions of all three goes a long way.

Especially flashblock, which prevents flash content for executing at all unless you explicitly ask for it.

Another important note: You should expect at least the same rate of ad-based malware on ANY site on the net, especially porn sites. I'm sure xhamster is no worse and no better than the rest in that regard.

That stuff is just evil! While we on the topic, does anyone know the trick to stop LiveJasmin from popping up? I heard there was a way to block just that site, without blocking all pop-ups? That one and "The Secret to Live Cams"...oh, god, and "The Ex-Girlfriends" video...save me...

Most browsers will let you block all pop-ups (new windows) - which generally is a good thing to do.

Even with systems like adblock, you can easily configure it to block nothing at all, then manually block the ones you want to block as you see fit.

I just blocked the sites here with an entry in the hosts-file.
That means the popup comes, but at least it doesn't really interrupt because the page can't be found.

Example:

Code: Select all

127.0.0.1 livejasmin.com
oh, and well, it works for any site that we want to get rid of including subdomains:

Code: Select all

127.0.0.1 www.any.com #blocking www.any.com but not info.any.com127.0.0.1 site.org #blocking both www.site.org and info.site.org127.0.0.1 *.that.info #blocking www.that.info and info.that.info but not that.info
You can copy it including the comments, since the # is used in the hosts-file to add comments.
Hosts-file can be found at C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts (no extension) and can be opened with any text-editor, however you'll need to open your text-editor with administrator privileges (otherwise you won't be able to save your changes).
I have, for instance, all the google- and MSN-ads banned out this way.
Spoiler: show
You can even use google to find the adresses that you need to ban the google-ads

That works to a point... the trouble is that often the content you wish to block resides on the same base URL as the site you want to view...

I know, that's why I don't rely on the hosts-file alone.
I've got a seperate pc here which filters all traffic which has also an option to block just folders/files (www.something.com/ads or www.something.com/advertisement.php) instead of the whole something.com domain.

I've been visiting and uploading to xhamster for years and have never had a problem.
