I would recommend a continued doubling
so 8 hours of rest would be 16 edges when you wake,
this is quite possible..

the way you have it breaks the SAFE< SANE rules
it is actually dangerous to go short on sleep
though it is possible to wake every 2 hours
this means you actually sleeping much of the day.
takes 12 to 14 hours to get your sleep waking every 2
the further complication is, the edging which might make it difficult to go back to sleep.

Well, I simply must put my two cents worth here.

I think any task that has a no win situation is not a task worth beginning. If you can never succeed....then it is a waste of valuable time.
I am not trying to be rude....simply stating my thoughts.

I also agree with SC.....the sleep thing does NOT comply with "safe and sane".

Well since a good night's sleep affects my sexual needs and abilities higher than a week's chastity, i say that rule would be counterproductive and right down broken.

SC's suggested continued doubling is broken too however, as 2^(n-1) for n=8 is 128, not 16, and that would be a LOT of edges to do before you leave for work.

So if it was my call i'd say do your edges in advance before you go to sleep. Either:
a)simply do just those 8 for 8 hours(still a nice number to go sleep with) or
b) do 8 for the first 4 hours of your sleep, the do 8 more in the morning for the 4 hours still missing.

though 6 hours of sleep is.. do-able
