Wow, that's sad. I never knew there was a censorship team here!

I've just reread the terms of service, and I did not find any clause authorizing Milovana to modify forum posts (which would be "User Submissions" in the document): the website is only allowed to remove the posts, not edit them.

But... who cares about the TOS? They seem to go completely against the existence and the purpose of Milovana. Take, for instance, TOS-5-C, which reads: "5.C. In connection with User Submissions, you further agree that you will not [...] (iii) submit material that is [...] obscene, [...] or encourages conduct that would [...] give rise to civil liability, violate any law, or is otherwise inappropriate".

Pretty incongruent, isn't it?

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but the reason why they're editing the password out of posts is PROBABLY because the author clearly didn't want anyone other than his testers to go through the tease in the first place, hence there being a password. Just a hunch.

Sure, if he only wanted select people to see it, he shouldn't have published it... but the fact that there was a password standing in the way between you and the tease should have at least told you, "Hey, this tease clearly isn't meant to be available for me and anyone else without the password." And sure, the password wouldn't be too hard to find through trial-and-error, but just because you found out the password doesn't mean you need to post it all over these forums and give it to everybody. Hell, the only thing anyone should be upset with supermokkori for is for not making the password long and obnoxious so it isn't as easy to find out. :P

TL;DR -- Don't be a douchebag.

By the way supermokkori, is there any chance of you republishing that tease? The few people that posted feedback on it seemed to speak pretty highly of it, if I remember correctly :P

This has nothing to do with censorship. It is a simple matter of letting the author control when and to whom his work is made available. Which should be respected. Tease authors share their work freely and without commercial interests, so a little more gratefulness would be in order.

That being said, publishing teases with passwords is a poor solution anyway since there are several ways around it.
Yes, I most certainly CAN do it again!

janmb, maybe I didn't make myself clear. I'm not talking about the author's censorship. He does whatever he wants; it is his work, he has the copyright. I'm talking about Wyatt's censorship. He's the one who did edit 2 posts (which he did not author) in this thread, something that, apparently, as I read the TOS, he shouldn't have done.
lolz281 wrote:And sure, the password wouldn't be too hard to find through trial-and-error.
Oh... how innocent. Don't think the person who published the password made a big effort. I'd say he spent at most 15 seconds looking for the password. It is waaaay easier to obtain than trial-and-error. Any length: 3 characters, 30 characters, it doesn't matter. The platform has not been made to be secure, it is not, not at all.

To be clear: I'm not, and have never been, upset with supermokkori. His work is great. If he wants to use a password or not, I really don't care -- I know how to get it in, say, 10 seconds, if I really want to.

I'm upset with Wyatt, who edited 2 posts in this thread. That's the "censorship" I was talking about.

Wyatt definitely didn't do anything wrong by removing those published passwords. It should be pretty damn obvious to anyone that mokkori wanted to keep the tease limited by putting in a password in the first place. Which in turn makes it equally obvious that posting the password in public here on the forums goes against the author's wishes. Which we just agreed should be respected, right?

I'm definitely in the same camp as seraph when it comes to the general view of modding and freedom of speech, but this case has nothing to do with freedom of speech at all. Freedom of speech pertains the right to voice your opinion, regardless of it being popular or not. Posting a password is hardly an opinion - it is outright a violation of the author's rights.

One of the problems is that unlike classic teases,
Flash teases can not be shared privately, for testing.

Hopefully this will be possible in the new version/system when it is finalised and released to us all.

It is strange how far some wish to control our authors.
Yet are unwilling to become an author themselves.

He obviously did: he edited a post which he did not author. Full stop.
janmb wrote:... goes against the author's wishes. Which we just agreed should be respected, right?
You assumed I agreed with you, but I didn't. But this is irrelevant. The point is:

Respecting the author's wishes is totally different from someone else enforcing it.

Respecting the authors wish is something that could have been done by the one who posted the password, before posting it. Enforcing it is something that has been done by Wyatt.
janmb wrote:it is outright a violation of the author's rights.
Author rights? Are you really sure you understand what "author rights" mean? You do know that, when publishing something here, the author grants each user lots of rights, right?
TOS, 5.B wrote:You also hereby grant each user of the Milovana Website a non-exclusive license to access your User Submissions through the Website, and to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display and perform such User Submissions as permitted through the functionality of the Website and under these Terms of Service.

The whole point is: eatitnewb did something that made some people feel sad (and, for sure, many other people were very happy), but, in turn, Wyatt did something that he couldn't have done. And I'm criticizing it. In other words: being nazi is not cool. That's all.

There's no "controlling the authors" (I really didn't get what you said, les), there's absolutely no bad feeling about the author or authors, nothing, really. It is as simple as stated in the above paragraph.
