Enlish As A Second Language

Post by les »

I have decided to amalgamate several posts of mine in one place

Tinyspell
free works with very nearly any program.

SpellCheckPlus,
paste text up to 2,000 charaters into the box, click Check Text for any grammar and spelling errors which are then highlighted with explanations for you. When tested and compared with others, this tool was quite impressive and the clear winner for detecting grammatical problems.

PaperRater
checks your document for grammar and spelling errors. On top of that, it helps you to improve the document's readability, word choice and style by an in-depth analysis.

After the Deadline,
check your writing in a text box and get feedback on spelling errors, grammar and style suggestions.

You can also drag the bookmarklet
Add Proofreader
to your browser's bookmark bar so that you can use it on any webpage with a text box.

Grammarcheck.net

Write out your text as usual, in whatever word processing program you use. It’s a good idea to go over it yourself, first, to catch any stray words or thoughts and bring them in to order. Then, just head for the online grammar checker and enter your completed text into the text field. Once you click the button, all you need to do is sit back and let the checker do its work. It will check grammar usage and spelling and give you the final verdict. All you need to do then is make the suggested changes in your text before you send it on its way. Of course, doing a final read through is important to make sure both that you’ve caught everything, and that the changes are ones you agree with.

Free English Grammar Course

Alison wrote:Many non-native English speakers find when they study the English language that there is quite a leap from basic informal conversational English to more formal business-like English.
The use of colloquial expressions by native English speakers can also be quite confusing to the non-native speaker.
In this free online course you will study comparisons between informal and formal uses of greetings, introductions, offers, expressions of gratitude and apologies.
You will learn how to recognise the differences between these so that you will be able to decipher what exactly is being communicated.
You will practise examples to further increase your knowledge and understanding of the English language.
This free English Grammar course will be of great interest to all learners who want to go beyond a basic level of spoken and written English and take their knowledge and understanding to a higher level.

I'll just throw this out there because I'd REALLY like to improve the quality of teases on here. I can't even count the number of times I've been in the middle of a tease and have either been severely distracted or even had to abandon the tease simply because the "Enlish" was horrible. :-/ I understand that this is a difficulty for many of our non-native English speakers (although I suspect it's just carelessness for others). In any case, I'd really like to help, and I think it will benefit everyone. So...

If ANYONE creating a new tease is ready to submit but would like help proofing the text before final submission, I will gladly do it for you...quickly and FOR FREE.

Whether you are a non-native English speaker or you are just trying to improve your presentation/story, I am an excellent proof-reader, native English speaker, and editor. PM me if interested and we'll work out the details.

I'm always available to proof read! I have been for ages but only one author has contacted me so far...
Please PM me if you require someone to proofread a tease before you make it live/public. English teases only.

Maybe, like the chat moderators and beta testers user groups, a tease "proofing" group could be established? I say this with caution as that would be a lot of responsibility. It would be nice though, if after creating a new tease, there was some kind of "approval" or proofing done before it was ACTUALLY made visible. I dunno. Something for the admins to consider.
