Goodkind and his books

Post by Mistress Jenifer »

Well...
It kind of struck me the the other day that out of everyone here on Milo.

I only know of a handful that have actually heard of the author Terry Goodkind and his best selling series Sword of Truth.

So I'm immensely curious to see who else has read the series and what they liked about it
(needless to say, if you haven't read the series, any post in this topic is a possible spoiler)

I was introduced by the
Legend of the seeker tv series .

I have read all the books including The Law of Nines, Debt of Bones but not The Hinges of Hell yet due in August.

I enjoyed that fact and fantasy blended together very well.
With many hurdles to be overcome not just magically whisked aside.

Spoiler: show
True to form of the worlds best sellers it was one man with a few friends against the overwhelming odds of evil.

The sword of thruth? don't you mean the laws of magic?
Damn translations, no wonder everyone looked at my funny in Munich last year when I mentioned them.

The best thing about the books in my opinion is the fact that the protagonist (Richard?) remains a somewhat believable character almost all the way through. It's a point that annoys me very often in fantasy series that the heroes become more stereotypical instead of the 'real' persons they are in the first 2-3 books.
Also for as far as I can remember the series doesn't really have a weaker book in it whereas the wheel of time (by robert Jordan) ,which I find a slightly better series as a whole, has one book which was kinda ... boring.

A minor flaw I found was that the first book is a story in itself whereas the other books can't really stand on their own. It's not that big of a deal but it made it so that I didn't really feel satisfied with the endings of books 2 and 3.

You missed a book les :P
Omen Machine, came out fall of last year I believe maybe early this year can't remember exactly. Pretty much continues the day after Confessor ended.

Though not sure about the Hinges of Hell... Doesn't seem to be a continuation of the series like Omen Machine. If you read Omen, you'd know.

Tbh
I'm surprised more people here don't know of the series. Mord-Sith... all I gotta say XD

I loved the series. Some of them were better than others, but I enjoyed each one. My favorites were Wizard's First Rule, Temple of the Winds, Faith of the Fallen, and then the Chainfire Trilogy (Chainfire/Phantom/Confessor).

Very much enjoyed the series. The villains were imaginative and varied, the challenges were often overcome in unexpected ways, and they gave a real sense of the bigger conflict going on in the world. I still have to read Omen Machine though, so I'm a little behind.

Ah the Mord-Sith.
And Richard tamed them.

I read and liked the omen machine, the ending screams sequel, and so many questions to be answered.
The Hinges of Hell is shown as a novel,(See http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/g/terry-goodkind/) not part of the SOT, series.

An Aside
The trouble with cuts in England is libraries are woefully under funded and only middle road best sellers seem to be of the few books bought new.

I like e books on my tablet.
I can read in bed with the lights off.
But you/we can't share them like real books can, when bought,
However my library now has a limited stock for lending that works well.

PS good luck to everybody in your Up Cumming game Jenny. :bounce:

You can't share?
I shared the first three books of the Inheritance cycle (Eragon series) with a co-worker on my Nook. Can't share many of the SoT books, I can share Blood of the Fold. Though I only have Blood of the Fold, Faith of the Fallen, and Confessor on my Nook XD

Hehe.
Richard is by far one of my favorite heroes/good guys, Eragon comes close to him too for top spot. Which is saying a lot cause I don't like a lot of the good guys in books/TV/movies.
Mord-Sith themselves are intriguing. My co-worker actually skipped over the chapters in the first book when Richard was captured by Denna. Then had to go back and read them when she hit the second book and Denna popped up. She read like the first attempt at training Richard after capturing him, and skipped. Didn't like it.

I use a Xoom Tablet.

I am sure that sharing will happen when the suppliers reason that a hundred nickels is better than 10 dimes.
And/or it is cracked.

Anything done in software can be undone in software.

I remember the pirating of videos when films were £70 or more.

Then Disney released at £9.99. nobody bothered with a crappy pirate.
Too cheap to to make the effort.

I've read the books, all but omen machine, and I love them. Some very hot mordsith (and confessor!) scenes. Watched the tv series as well and it didn't disappoint in the hotness category. unf!

blah the TV series didn't go beyond season 2 for a reason.

They flopped hard on following the book storyline. I mean they glazed over an entire 600-700 page book in a single freaking episode (Faith of the Fallen if your curious). And they didn't even use the same reasons, why not? Cause Jagang wasn't introduced yet.

They flopped, and it cost them viewers. So whatever network cut them loose.

The actor portraying Richard also did a poor job of it imo. The one portraying Kahlan did well, but the Richard one. Good lord, he didn't have the depth needed for the later Richard dialogue. Nor did he have the fighting style needed, its been stated how Richard is one with a blade. The guy playing him, did not even attempt to portray that.

Never judge a book by its TV Series/Film

The series was ok until I read the book. Everything out of context and order

bumping up this topic!

I has found out, and those who know of his books may not know...

First Confessor: Legend of Magda Searus.

Is due out July 2nd, as mostly an ebook, as only 300 actual printed copies are being made (he's private publishing)

edit:
AND!
After it, sooner or later, will be the sequel to Omen machine. Apparently he is only signed to make 3 books with Tor (one of which he is now doing himself, publishing wise)

Thanks for the heads up Jenny.
But will I get access to it in England?
I will wait and see.

From what I can tell. You should be able to.

It looks like he will be releasing it via his webstore attaches to his site. And most likely releasing the ebook in the standard Ereader format that every one can read (its something like EPUB I think). Nothing confirmed just yet though
