Men can get the same high from looking at a sexy, curvaceous woman that they do from drugs or alcohol, says a new study. The results may help explain why some men are so preoccupied with pornography, researchers said.
In the study, 14 men, whose average age was 25, were asked to rate how attractive they found photos of the nude derrieres of women before and after they had surgery to enhance their hips. The surgical procedures redistributed the women's weight by putting waist fat onto their butts.
The result: The mens' brain scans showed that viewing the women after surgery actually activated the regions of the brain that are linked with rewards, including the areas associated with responses to alcohol and drugs.
The idea that men seem hardwired to find attractive women rewarding shouldn't come as a surpise.
"Hugh Hefner could have told us that by showing us how many zeroes are in his bank account," researcher Steven Platek, evolutionary cognitive neuroscientist at Georgia Gwinnett College in Georgia, told LiveScience.
Added Platek, "These findings could help further our understanding of pornography addiction and related disorders such as erectile dysfunction in the absence of pornography."
Men are wired to love women's curves for a reason, says psychotherapist Karol Ward, author of the book "Find Your Inner Voice."
"Curvy looks in a woman mean that she is good at reproduction and so the man gets the message that this is someone they could procreate with," she explains. "The attraction has a lot to do with fertility."
Fidelity expert Danine Manette says that bigger-hipped women look like they are better at bearing children and men are subconsciously drawn to them.
"There is something physiological that goes off in men that attracts them to these women," she explains. "It's not something that they are even aware of. But when it comes to pure animal attraction, men go for the women who look like their bodies are built for reproduction."
Platek, who with colleague Devendra Sing, described the findings online in the journal PLoS ONE, also noted that women size up other women "in an effort to determine their relative attractiveness and to maintain mate guarding - or, in other words, keep their mate away from optimally designed females."
