I’ve been working on a cock hero video on off for the past couple of years and have been using it as a learning experience for choosing scenes to create a story, creating beatmeters using BPM analyzers, audacity and beatmeter generator (thank you for making this software kerkersklave) as well as learning how to put video clips together using Vegas pro.

However, I am having trouble wrapping my head around balancing the in-video audio and music, with either the music too loud, moans or peaks from the video being too much or even just background hum from the video. Can anyone please give me some advice or at least point me in the right direction for sorting out the audio or how they approach their audio?
I’m not sure which software you use, but any decent video editor should have options for raising and lowering audio levels for whole clips in the timeline, and even adjust the levels up and down within the clip in the timeline. Some also let you set the audio level of the source video so that all the places it has been pulled into the timeline, the audio will be at that level. That way you can deal with sources that are louder or quieter than others, or specific moments that are louder or quieter than you want them to be.

Typically, I'll do an audio pass through the whole project once it's fully edited, adjusting any clips that need it. I'll often do the click track and the music balancing first, so I have a baseline to compare the clip audio to.

Part of it is to have good quality sources that don't have distortion or hiss under the audio. Most video editors have noise filters you can put on your audio clips as well to get rid of background noise and hiss and such, but nothing beats a high quality source.
My latest Cock Hero is Sweet Mammaries, a Cock Hero Quickie.

I've also made 4-play, 4-play 2, Getting Down With The Thiccness, Fuck Hard Cum Harder, Filthy Cute and Kittens & Cream. You can stream them all on SpankBang or search up their announce threads here for other options. :)

I'd say to assume an audio track as the "standard" for your production. Basically, it should be your music track. I play it by ear, and anything that is too low or too high to my taste compared to the "standard", I adjust it. Lowering audio is the easiest. There a "gain" horizontal slider in your audio clip that you can lower. Want to only lower part of the audio track? You can slice it just like videos, then lower its "gain". Now, to raise the volume, I use the volume fx. Sometimes, it's not enough, so you can use two volume fx side by side.

The generated output of your video editor may be bloated, too big for not any significant benefit. You'd be surprised how smaller the video becomes, without any impact to the quality.

Oh, just realized you wrote Vegas Pro in the post haha. Sorry. I think the rest of the post still applies, but I primarily have experience with Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, so I can't give Vegas Pro advice directly. But sounds like doremi knows it.:)

Thanks for your advice 3xTripleXX & doremi I am planning on having a play around with things this week whilst I have some time away from work. I forget where I read this but I did see mention of having to normalize music tracks to help with audio levels, I'm guessing I'm going a little overboard with that?

While checking audio levels, make sure that the value on the rightside is never higher than 0. I try to keep it at -2 at max during the loudest parts (they can be easily found by checking the graph and looking for the peak). This should help you avoid distortions, however the method doremi mentioned can also lead to these, especially if you're using 3 volume fx instead of 1 or 2 (but sometimes you wanna these moans loud and clear, so what you're gonna do  ).

Just saw your discussion on audio and wanted to chime in with some general tips and infos on audio editing.

Please don't edit your audio by ear. Instead, use the dB level meter of your editing software. Your goal should be to achieve a standard loudness. Most CH videos are way louder than standard (which can be annoying because they force you to drastically lower your volume).

As a rule of thumb, never go beyond -6 dB. This means that your loudest parts should not exceed -6. Professional productions exceed -6 very rarely.

For music, a rule of thumb is to lower the dB of any given song by 9 dB (this means, from 0 to -9). This works for most songs.

For porn audio, there's no rule of thumb. Most porn (including studio porn) is very badly mixed. Speaking voice should be at around -12. Moaning can be louder, but don't go above -6.

If you stick to these dB levels, your audio should be fine. And with a little bit of practice, you'll learn how to balance it all out.

By the way, dB is not a unit that measures loudness. It measures the intensity of a signal. So, dB can be misleading. That's why loudness is measured in LUFS (Loudness Units Relative to Full Scale).

Todays editing programs have dB meters to measure the amount of dB and loudness meters to measure the LUFS. Many editing programs have tools to automatically adjust the loudness of your video to the LUFS standards of TV, streaming, Youtube etc. In projects that are not very complex (like most CH), this can be a very comfortable way to make sure that your audio levels are okay (target loudness for most broadcasting is -24 LUFS).

If you don't know where to find certain features in your editing software, do a Youtube search. There are many great Youtube tutorials for any video editing software. Audio can be especially difficult to understand, so watch those tutorials. Many do a great job breaking it down to a level that's easy to apply to your own editing projects.

You guys look like real experts on audio treatment. I'm learning things here. But are those concepts really necessary, especially for a beginner?

I use a little software called MP3Gain that normalize the songs to a certain level, so they are all at a similar volume. Sometimes the result is not ideal, but it works for most songs I tried.

I adjust the rest of the audio manually once the song is set as the base volume. Since moanings and such are so unbalanced even in the same video it's not that important to set them as the perfect volume. Just being close enough to each other will do the trick. You can even cut clips if needed and adjust the volume for each one, in case you want to mute some undesired parts.

 Thanks!

I found this: mp3gain.sourceforge.net, and then noticed that it is already included in my UN*X apps bundle, just was not selected.

My video editor of choice is DaVinci Resolve. Professional level and free unless you need some of the fancier features. I dropped Premiere Pro in favor of that, since PP is stupid expensive. Been very happy with it so far.

Preferences of content don't really belong in this thread, since that's so individual. If you don't want male vocals in your video, don't put them in there, but it doesn't have anything to do with the technical aspect of making a CH vid.

It's nearly impossible to do this by ourselves, unmixing audio mixes. The best would be to contact the creators that made those so they can specifically select the music track and the beat track, and if you are lucky, the visual beatmeter can be included.
