Update: KinkWork is for SALE

Post by Alison »

Okay my darlings...

I'm having a dialog with myself and the end result is that I just don't want to own any sites at all... I love providing content, but the actual owning and maintaining of the thing- not so much. I also only know how to build in HTML and this really should be a database....

I'm offering KinkWork, the domain and all the content up for sale now. Seriously, make me an offer. At this point-- I'll consider almost anything.

It is also possible that I might also be convinced to have an arrangement where I continue doing the research, and I continue to add content. Seraph0x will vouch that while I'm a bit bi-polar in my work habits, I keep it up. I'm the person who put up 95% of the URGE and the Submissive Challenge...

The idea behind the site is fabulous. I've thought of many different ways to monetize it, but since I really don't want to own a website that lists all the Independent Adult Entertainers, I haven't implemented any of it.

I love research, but I've decided it's more fun to fuck with people's heads... more on that coming shortly...

The site is currently not finished- so I was really not in a position to implement monetization- but here is what I had considered reasonable:

There are more than 20,000 Independent Adult Entertainers(IAE) in the US. When you add strippers, dancers and others in that realm, the number may be as high as 30,000. Kink Work as a site (and valued resource) really will become valuable when there are at least 5,000 folks added-and from that point forward, the more folks listed, the better it will be as a resource. My plan had been to add 100-200 a day (about 2-5 hours), but I've been facing a substantial cash crunch now which keeps me from doing that.

Once the site has a significant number of lovely IAE, the monetization mechanism that I had wanted to implement was that the initial listing is free, with name / URL. Also the first six words are free. But the idea was to charge for toplist (a charge to on top-in addition to alphabetical order-something I've already been asked about), photo listing (which requires someone with better coding skills than I) and a charge for additional words (my thought was $25 for the first 100 words and $1 per word after that).

The Pie in the Sky Numbers? If 10% of the IAE do a 200 word listing at $1 per word, that's $225,000 annually from listings. That doesn't include other revenue elements (photos, top list) and you may want to add advertising on top of that.

The other element is if the data completed- one of the "other" assets of this is a database that would be created with contact information for all IAE in the US (I've been collecting such information since I think it's important to contact people to tell them where they are listed.) The finished database would have a value of $5,000-10,000 to a number of other adult services- including Adult Web Designers and other Escort advertising services.

But it's not completed yet. The site could be finished as is in the html, but I can't afford to spend time on it right now. I'm about to head to Los Angeles and start submitting my resumes as I look for a real job. I've been an "entrepreneur" for long enough, and I need something steady.

As for cost. Make me an offer. Expediency wins as well. (I'll take much less in an offer that can be paid sooner rather then something from later.) Things are astonishingly tight at the moment.

It looks good in theory, But I doubt anyone will pay enough to cover time and material losses. The resource should be not big nor usefull to gain yopu money. Noone cares how usefull this or that resource could be. It should be POPULAR, and to achieve that, you'd need commercial, good design lots of other arrangments. Pretty good site engine so the good info won't be overwhelmed by some trash. Good monitoring system, because 1 troyan will turn the user off your site practically forever.

This is like A LOT of work. To add even 5000 of entertainers you'd have to spend hours every day for a lot of months, and it gets tougher in time. Because you will more and more often bump into the links of the people you already added, but you can't remember them all. Also, some people will eventually retire, some of them without letting you know, and you'll have to keep this on track too.

Noone would be buying extra words from you unless your resource will be popular. I meen REALLY popular, I don't know the numbers but at least like some middle-hand social network. Noone will pay you for a 1000 views a day.
And on the other hand it will not be popular with so little info provided. 6 words and a link? That's not enough. It's far more easy to GOOGLE something you want, rather use your site. Here's the problem too. It's like a curced circle. You'd have to spend like half a year at least to make it standing, just pounding the money and TIME in and not getting any return. You can't do that on your own too, you'd have to employ people. One can't keep track on 5000 people, let alone 20-30 thousend. Again, money.
Why would entertainer pay you good money for something as silly as 200 words? Why, if there's FREE services, where he/she can leave all info and photos. Placing the description in a couple of free blogs and social networks will earn him/her a lot more visitors, that will click the link on your site.

As I see it the site is simlpy deadborn, and can be ressurected only with very good management and investments. Will anyone do that? Especially among guys here? I don't think so, there's far more places to spend money and time. One would have to quit the job to keep it running. Something I don't think even has a potential, no matter how much you spend.
To make this kind of site, you'd have to spend not 50-100 dollars to buy it from you. You'd have to spend THOUSENDS to have even hope for profit, and it's not for sure anyway.

Interesting points..

I've had nibbles for my site... not from here but from other places I've listed and the problem is that I don't like the sites that are interested... It's not why I did this.

I think I will try and keep the site for a bit longer and add just a bit each day... checking broken links is an easy thing to do... and in the next few weeks I'll be adding resources that help eliminate Trojans (although I've never had a problem with any of the links).

There is a couple more things to consider...

*It already gets traffic. There are a number of independent adult entertainers who already link back to the site, and that is generating traffic now...

*There are not that many places that allow for a free link. Craigslist is gone. Backpage is becoming less and less user friendly, and depending on your location can cost up to $40 per add of 500 characters. Eros charges about $50 per month in the more successful cities. Other regional posting areas either charge or require something from you. There is also the perpetual issue that if you don't fit into a specific tangible niche, than you can't really find your audience. If you do spankings but not sex, you can't be listed on the escort sites. Love strap on play, then the escort sites *and* the bdsm sites do not know what to do with you. And if you want to be on the niche sites, the results there can be difficult. Straight male escorts have a difficult place to land... And while there are new and free sites launching... most of them aren't really free... they are in this to make money- and the money is easiest from the entertainers.

*No one else has the actual purpose that I have... I want to list every Independent Adult Entertainer. All of them. I want to have a real resource.

*Six words is enough for a basic listing:
Example:
Sara Prescott | http://saraprescott.com/ | exclusive vip companion - Actually she only needs three words... Since the location is already part of my site, and there is a link to her site- it's easy to find out more about her.

I'm not certain at this moment how I'm going to monetize this site... but I think I'm going to try and put the data together and see what happens. At the very least, it gives me something for the next part of my career- proof that I can wrangle huge amounts of information and do the data aggregation.

I really appreciate your feedback... Typing this out and making me think this through has been enormously helpful!

Hugs!

Let us know you experience Alison.

I'm curious about the business aspect. Nezhul has taken a slightly conservative approach, and I wonder if there is a better, less labor intensive approach.
