Re: Indigo
One of the best breakfasts is porridge
This will please Anna.
If you have a microwave you can nuke it at work.
Or make up in a Thermos/vacuum flask to finish cooking on way to work.
I have muesli which I like to soak to soften before eating you could take that in a lock and lock box to snack at you desk.
Check through the cereal bars for a low fat and sugar one and eat like a candy bar.
Those pills that need to be taken early have beside the bed and take when you wake and before you get up.
If I have an early start I even set an alarm to take pain killers then snooze while they work.

Well this blows
Any reason the thyroid isnt working? Can it be fixed? Are you getting a second opinion?

What schedule?Indigo™ wrote:
The downside is, as most folks are aware, diabetics are actually told to eat more often, less food. This schedule really screws up any kind of breakfast plans ...
Some breakfast ideas:
Boiled eggs + steamed veggies ... you can prepare them on sunday and microwave and eat throughout the week.
1 slice of multigrain bread + PB + boiled eggs
egg+vegetable fritatta prepared on weekends.

Re: Indigo
Is german-style "quark" available in your area? It's also translated as curd cheese and somewhat similar to cottage cheese (which I do not like) but quark with some herbs tastes pretty nice. Or add some fruit and put it in a blender with a splash of milk. Or a bit of jam/jelly. Pretty much no/few carbohydrates and still tasty
And go for wholegrain bread/pasta.. especially whole grain bread cause it even tastes better than white bread (though that may be cause i'm german, since hardly anyone else seems to prefer whole grain
).. more complex carbohydrates = smaller blood sugar spikes.
White meat is awesome as well, and really easy to prepare. Take a casserolle dish, pour in some vegetable stock to cover the bottom, add chicken breast, put some veggies on top and a bit of cheese. just put it into the oven and you're pretty much done. you can also try different ways of flavoring the meat, i like ajvar (relish made from bell peppers and eggplant) or just take some sriracha hot sauce or whatever else you like. this is my go-to "i wanna eat healthy but i'm also too lazy to do something more elaborate"-meal
Breakfast is difficult, though, i usually eat "müsli" (wholegrain cereal, check the labels to get some with as little sugar as possible) with some lowfat milk... luckily i don't have to pay attention to my blood sugar level too much, but still, this kind of diet helped me lose a decent amount of weight over the last couple of months.

Is Indy saying he never get new ideas from another and how to use new knowledge.
Remember Indy I love word play.
Indy which of the unrefined carbos are you OK with,
Then we can build with those.
I like to think if I can't change something
Then I will adapt me or something else to make life more pleasant.
We have to look at "Legal Compromises" within your medical limitations.
I have found too many dieticians and docs seem incapable of adapting.
Often their view is every thing has a set method and time.
I had one who said I was only allowed Shredded wheat for breakfast no other food was permissible!!
Another said I had to eat at specific times no matter what went on in my life.
A third said I must never ever put salt on my food.
I queried her, she had assumed everybody would put a full 5 grams (teaspoon) every time.
When I told her that my salt grinder gave less than a tenth of a gram ( fiftieth of a teaspoon) in 5 twists she relented.
Conclusion:
You must adapt, either to the unrelenting time table beloved of nutritionists, moulding you life around timings and tastes that don't fit in.
Or
Adjusting the time table to fit your life style,
Ideally a bit of both.
You need a routine for food and meds that fits as many ways as possible and easy to maintain.
Old school suggested breakfast as a king, lunch like a lord, and supper like a pauper.
I am sure this two hours before food first pill of the day has more flexibility than seems at first.

Don't say that;
at least 1/2 hour before. Was read as two hours before.

Re: Indigo
any fruit? Strawberries should be okay at about 5 grams of sugar per 100g, shouldn't they? cause you only need a few to get the quark to be tasty. and if you think it lacks sweetness, then you could try some sweetener.Indigo™ wrote: Milk, fruit are both out. Too many sugars in either of them.
And no milk.. wow. I hope that your body is going to adapt and get better.
All i can tell you is that about 1.5 years ago I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, didn't need injections but took metformin.. since then I've lost about 70 pounds, exercised more and now my blood sugar levels seem to be fine even without meds, as long as i stick to a good diet. Your case is probably more complicated, but hang in there, I'm sure it'll get better

Re: Indigo
Hi Indy,
We dealt with my father-in-law and diabetes. I'm not an expert, by any means.
I know that one of the biggest kind of help that we got, was sitting down with a "qualified" dietitian. Your doctor can recommend one, or if you are seeing a specialist for the diabetes, there should be one through them. If you aren't seeing a specialist, I would recommend it. Regular family doctors do not have all of the knowledge that is necessary to combat this. You need to be able to live a life that is not full of misery and making you want to quit.
A dietitian will ask about foods you like and dislike and together you can come up with food that won't make you want to puke, and food that makes you glad it's time to eat.
They also go over your schedule. Sitting down to a breakfast, sometimes just doesn't work for everyone. They can recommend alternatives.
With the two hour before you eat pill, you might want to consult with a doctor that believes in alternative medicine. There are "natural" things that can be taken that do not have the two hour time gage on it. That can be a huge pain in the butt, because that will start to mess with your sleep.
Controlling and learning about YOUR diabetes is not going to happen over night. Your body has to get use to the new meds and what to do with them.
You have to learn what the difference feels like, inside, when your blood sugar is low and when it is high and what you need to eat or drink, in each situation to balance it out.
I think the most important piece of advice I could offer you is this.
You need to control the diabetes and not allow the diabetes to control you. *smile*
