I promise you that you can't possibly suffocate yourself by holding your breath. Breathing is an involuntary action when it comes down to it. It's something you ultimately can't control. Your body will give itself air when your cells are deprived of oxygen too long. CO2 is a byproduct of respiration, and there are neurons in the medulla oblongata that trigger your muscles to take in air when the levels of CO2 get too high. They're located in the brain because that's the organ which is most sensitive to having sufficient oxygen. Note that these are a separate set of neurons from the ones that control rhythmic breathing. It's definitely something to be careful with, but is very far from snuf or suicide.
FWIW, I sometimes find it hot to play around with breath control with a guy. One thing I like to do is make a rule that he can only touch himself while he's holding his breath. Of course, he can breathe any time...but hands off! ;) This also works when i'm with a guy, ie. he can be inside me, and he can breathe, but not at the same time. I find it pretty hot watching someone choose between sexual pleasure and breathing...it's so interesting to me that you can make someone want the former more than the latter. ;)
