Beat Meter - A Must Have?

I've seen it done well by different authors both ways. But to have a discernable beat, with or without a meter is pretty essential. Otherwise it's not CH, its a music video or a montage. Only one notable exception I can think of is the Horken videos. The editing and music selection is soo good that you can watch them in order and follow along with the music, and you have a really good (and difficult) CH vid. Others have tried doing it without beats or a meter and its never really turned out well, IMO. I enjoy them for what they are, as a music video, but its not the same as a good CH video.
