VR oculus alternative

Post by Claudius »

Hello,

here is the guy with so many questions. Sorry, but it is really like something that I need asking others and not only search on the internet. ANd often I don't find answers on Google.

Do you know if there is an alternative to VR oculus that is less a spying tool? I don't want that big companies use my data about when and how long I watch which VR porn. Sorry, not sorry. Zuckerberg should suck his own dick and not study my porn history.

Second I am not sure if it is something for me, what is the cardboard VR? Is that a shitty gimmeck or is it a low budget VR glasses? I see there is a difference in the price between cardboard and oculus, but if there are more differences I don't know.

Your Claudius.

Hey Claudius,

I was in a similar situation a couple month ago and I have decided for the Oculus though I'm with you about your privacy concerns.

So, first it depends a lot on what you want to do with VR. Do you only want to watch porn or do you also want to play games etc?
The Oculus is relatively cheap with a high resolution which results in nice images/videos and is designed for playing games either directly with the hardware inside the Oculus or by connection with a computer. This gives you the nice alternative to watch custom videos from your computer.
There are other alternatives from Valve and HTC. Both are a lot more expensive, offer less resolution and are often described as having unstable connections or big and disruptive cables hanging in front of you.
That said, I haven't tested these devices and that's only what I read about them.
I doubt that these headsets send less information to their companies.

The cardboard VR is only a box that holds your smartphone and directs your view. You can basically do anything that you can do on your phone, which is basically only watching videos in my opinion. I would say that this is the cheapest way of discovering VR if you own a smartphone. Since I do not, it was no choice for me.

What I found it is: you want really big resolution to have a good experience. It starts with 4k-videos to have a nice view. 1080p and 2k are okay everything below is just not enjoyable. So, I guess you basically want to have a device (either headset or smartphone) that can handle such resolutions.

I hope this is helpful,
Augustulus

I see that there are videos w/ VR. Computer games or more interactive stuff sounds also interessting but the only videogame that I play is forza horizon and pokemon. So I dont really know what I should do with VR in that games. And then the next thing really is that I think maybe it is just an other bucket list thing. I am so much bored in masturbation and nathing feels really exciting anymore. Possible that I use it five times and that's it. Maybe I really should try a cardboard and it it is working I copuld think about high tech. 4k I think is even not so easy to get material. But I am not sure. My smartphone is full-hd+.

As Augustulus said, I think it depends on the experience you want. Dedicated headsets will have higher quality resolutions and frame rates for a more comfortable experience. For some it’s easy to feel sick within VR so high resolutions and smooth frames will help a lot with this.

I also have an Oculus Quest, though I had mine before Facebook was required. One thing to mention is that their maybe a browser you could side load with SideQuest instead of the oculus approved browsers. This may or may not reduce the amount of data the headset collects. I haven’t looked too much into it but I can imagine someone with similar concerns to yours have looked into a way to limit data collection. Also, I know sidequest has a Pokémon VR MMO that basically a Firered/leaf green port but with VR 3D graphics for free. There is also mods that allow some pc games to be in VR, I bet someone has made a VR mod for Forza though it’ll probably be just the headset implemented and you’ll have to use a controller.

Personally I don’t like VR with smart phones as the software behind it tends not to be high quality for me. But it’s a cheap way to try it without spending hundreds of dollars. That is if you have a smartphone that can handle it.

Hello Claudius,

I am a beginner like you and make my first steps in the VR last time. Let me tell you my experiences so far:
A real cardboard box is the lowest level of so called "cardboards" and I decided to buy a cheap plastic device
which offers more setting options and a much better wearing comfort. This is also important and not only a
good smartphone. But nobody really tells you before what all is needed and where the problems could be.
The device should sit fix on your head. Mine has a rigid support which floats like a halo over my head. :-D
It should sit comfortalbe on the nose and over the eyes.
The lenses should be ok and not scratched. High quality would be better.
The distance beetween them should fit to your pupil distance or should be adjustable.
The distance of the lenses to the smartphone should be adjustable too.
Cardboard and smartphone size must fit together.
The holder of the smartphone should be good so that the buttons of the phone and the head phone connector
is not affected.
You may have to buy a vr controller if the cardboard has no good working touchscreen button for the phone.
I would not recommend a cardboard with mounted head phone speakers. They may not fit well.

My biggest problem at the moment is the software to connect the phone with the computer.
The two programmes Trinus and Vridge are not working well in my case.

Hope i could help you a bit and wish you luck!

Greetings from Germany!

So does anyone know which mainstream VR software kits don't focus on data capture?

Assuming that the real culprits here will be the the shops/apps loaded, especially if forced to be active even if running 3rd party programs...

Old thread, but incase.
two options,

I use media monkey and stream my files via network wifi.
Which means I can literally be off the internet.
If Using wifi without internet is not possible. I bought a cheap router and run media monkey through my quest and then use Skybox or Pigusus I like Skybox better. But I never have to login to the internet.

Clever! I am interested in VR but the spying has been a deal-breaker. Thanks for this idea. Maybe there is some VR in my future after all.

Nice work around.

Seems laughable though, no-one has a ready answer to OP's question; which VR Kits have least data spying?
Not even acknowledged this as genuine metric...

I don't know about least spying. My work around was to create a fake gmail and facebook account.

Oculus alternative: Pico neo3 link. It's an Oculus clone, same hardware.
Work good on Steam games.

Pico looks great for value & h/w specs. Some decent content (depending on your region).

It is however owned by TickTok (or their parents), and is trying to follow the same model as facebook/meta for high data user tracking. Then selling that info to third parties, plus extra ads to you...

I personally use a Pico 4 that is limited to my local network (internet access is denied for Picos MAC address on my router). As I'm only using it for PCVR and locally stored VR videos (you know what kind of videos :-D ), not being able to connect to internet directly with the Pico does not bother me. You can even update the headset offline if you need to.
