The rules behind earning your votes are mainly to convey intent. The intent is that for a first vote, you should give every item submitted a very thorough review and challenge yourself. It should be pleasurable to the point that you struggle to finish and when you do finish you want more.

A second vote should double that effort, a third should double again, etc.

I don't have any desire to be a stickler on rules, its a forum game. As long as your doing what you feel meets that intent your votes will count. I just ask that everyone is honest with themselves about their number of votes to keep a fairly level playing field.
