New Windows 10 issue
This isn't an issue specific to Milovana, so maybe the inquiry should go in the "All and Everything" board instead of this ("Technical Support") board, but anyway, here's a new thang I'm experiencing.
The context -- I connect a web browser (any browser) to a porn-link-gathering site such as jizzle.com or teensnow.com . Then, after I'm connected there, and the WHOLE porn page HAS connected and loaded -- ...
The problem -- all OTHER connections get broken. Generally there seems to be a DNS issue or something like it. Say I click on jizzle.com the first or third or ninth or whateverth link. And so the new page pops up, say, for example, it's redirecting to Xvideos.com. But the Xvideos page WON'T LOAD. AND no OTHER pages will load either -- Google.com, Milovana.com, you-name-it-.com are ALL going to sit there and wait and wait and NOT ever respond. Generally the eventual error page in the browser is "Firefox cannot establish a connection to google.com" or "Internet Explorer cannot locate milovana.com" or something like that. It looks like Domain Name Servers have gotten somehow co-opted into doing unauthorized tasks for jizzle.com or for teensnow.com. (Are you getting the description? If not, please ask, I'll try to describe better.)
The work-around -- disconnect all web browsers. Disconnect wi-fi. Wait forty seconds. Reconnect wi-fi. Try to go to Google. If I can get google.com to load, then, I'm OK again. The DNS problem (or whatever problem it is) has abated. Jizzle.com's nefarious plans, or teensnow.com's hijacking of my whatever, has ended, and I can go back to web-browsing normally.
The technical specifications -- ANY web browser does this (AFAIK); many of the porn-link-gathering sites that I've tried, do this (AFAIK) but some of the "better" tube-sites don't (Pornhub.com and Nudevista.com are NOT problematic); it started only after I changed from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. My Flash, Shockwave, and other plug-in settings and add-ons are all of the latest variety. The problem exists regardless of firewall and malware protection settings: doesn't seem to matter whether my anti-virus is turned on or off; I have used AVG and Avast in the past, or just plain ol' Windows Defender. I don't have any detectable virus or other malware, I checked that with several tools. (I'm computer-adept, don't worry, I know how to change settings 'n' stuff. Call me above-average, though not entirely a guru, on the question of having skills which end-users might need to tweak a Windows operating system.)
So, what gives? Related questions are, can a porn-link-gathering site "demand" that my internet connections get co-opted for its own uses? How? Is that a security hole introduced by Windows 10? Is anyone else experiencing this? What are the work-arounds? What are the risks? Or do I just have to tweak one or another setting to keep the problem from happening? Or ... yeah, etc..
Discuss please. Thanks for any advice!

Check your firewall isn't blocking connections - try the same procedure with firewall disable.
If that doesn't work try opening command prompt with admin privileges and type in:
ipconfig /flushdns
If you still have same problem try creating a new user account on your computer and test a web browser on that.
(Could be a corrupted profile or some other program creating problems)

Re: New Windows 10 issue
Does this happen with any other tech connected to your wifi?
I have found that sometimes you need to have a router turned off overnight so the connection to broadband is rebuilt not just reconnected.

Re: New Windows 10 issue
I'm running Windows 10, and can't replicate the problem you are having.
With IE11, or Chrome... all seem to work just fine. I even tried Edge, just for a goof... works as well.
Sounds like something on your end. As Slutastic suggested... sounds like a corrupt user profile or (more likely) something is blocking traffic. Bad DNS host, firewall, etc. Especially if it's happening in all broswers you try.
Check your Internet Options for a proxy... (control panel -> Internet Options -> connections tab -> Lan Settings) Uncheck USE PROXY if it's set. Even thought this seems like an IE option, it affects all internet traffic.
Also, Check your network adapter settings:
[Control panel -> Network & Sharing Center -> Change Adapter settings -> right click the network adapter, properites... -> double clike Internet protocol V4] ... if "Use the following DNS" is selected, jot down the numbers in both lines for future reference... but then change it to "Optain DNS automatically". -- (most often changed by malware, or malware protection software -- Norton is notorious for this)
Repeat for all your network adapters.(wired and wifi)
-- for a goof, google the DNS #s that WERE in there to see what they report back to. You might learn something new. :)

Hey, thanks to all for your suggestions. I worked on implementing or trying some of them, but so far little or no change, but I haven't tried them all yet. If I hit pay-dirt I'll let you know.

Re: New Windows 10 issue
I have a few other details, so here's what I've figured out SO FAR ...
First, just to be clear, here's how my home "network" is set up if that's important -- it's just a typical home wifi router setup, basically any computers connected at my house to that one wifi router are de-facto "on your network," which just means they're going through the router to the ISP company's cable-modem. The two pieces of hardware both rest on top of a bookshelf about four inches apart. The signal comes from the ISP, via a cable to our house, then from the wall, to a co-ax cable, to the ISP's cable-modem, to a short ethernet cable, to my wifi router, then to any of A, B, etc., below: (A) to the airwaves, to my Windows laptop's wifi antennae; or (B) to a slightly longer ethernet cable, to a Macintosh computer on the same bookshelf; or (C) to the airwaves, to another laptop downstairs; or (D) to the airwaves, to a guest's laptop if he visits and I tell him the password; or (E) to the airwaves, to my smartphone when it's at the house; etc..
Second, an interesting point: one thing that SERIOUSLY seems to affect the situation is whether or not I'm using FIREFOX PRIVATE BROWSING. I can replicate the trouble with any browser on any computer connected to this particular wi-fi router adapter. But I can REALLY maximize the trouble by using Firefox in its "private" capacity. And ... get this ... using Firefox on private on ONE computer will SCREW UP OTHER COMPUTERS worse on the same network.
The timing of the onset of the problems, and the delay that is experienced, and when that delay BEGINS, all suggest to me that it has something to do with the "redirect" function. You know, you go to jizzle.com, you see a link you like, you click it, it goes right to the video which you want at, say, xvideos.com. You watch it at xvideos. Then if you go BACK to jizzle.com and click on another link, the redirect function at jizzle.com will not send you to that link. Rather, it will (if you don't intervene) send you to some paid link, like ass4all.com or some such. That's an annoying redirect, you are familiar with it probably, and I usually use any of a number of ad-blockers or redirect-blocker utilities to prevent it from doing that. I have tried turning off the blockers, turning on extra blockers, etc., to see what happens to this problem. Generally there's no difference.
BUT ... the problem and the delay are encountered ONLY WHEN REDIRECTING should be taking place. Get it? Things don't slow down to a crawl and then to a zero-bandwidth connection unless jizzle.com is TRYING TO REDIRECT ME at the time. This suggests to me that there's a conflict or overlap among (1) what jizzle.com is trying to do with its annoying redirect function, and (1.b.) what I'm trying to do against that redirect, plus (2) what my router is trying to do with its DNS searches and so forth, and (3) what Firefox is trying to do with its privacy utilities.
Whether I solve this or not, is really not a major concern of mine. I thank you for your suggestions, but as of now, I have so many adequate work-arounds that I don't let the problem hassle me too much. But it's interesting to investigate, and sharing the details might teach me (or one of you?) something I didn't know about computers. And it might underline or highlight a type of security breach, or just a functionality weakness, in the setups that I'm using. So, for now, it's just an intellectual exercise, though rather interesting. Becoming kind of long-winded though, yes?
As to your specifics --

The Flush-DNS command did speed things up a bit, which hints at something related, but it didn't solve the problem. The new user account and the (mentioned already) firewall settings make no difference.Slutastic wrote:firewall ... ipconfig /flushdns ... new user account
2. @ Lord Les
The other tech connected to wifi was similarly problematic. I did turn the router off overnight and that did speed things up a bit, as did the Flush-DNS command (above @ slutastic) but, again, didn't solve the problem. Just sped it up for a while. Then it went back to being problematic.les wrote:any other tech connected to your wifi? ... router turned off overnight so the connection to broadband is rebuilt not just reconnected.
3. @ bhlomardy
None of the above made a difference. "Use Proxy" setting was not selected when I looked at it; "Obtain DNS automatically" was selected when I first looked at it. I tried both settings each way in all possible (2 x 2 = 4!) combinations. No difference. So I put them all back to where you suggest they should be (which is where they were at the outset anyway).bhlombardy wrote:I'm running Windows 10, and can't replicate ... corrupt user profile ... Re: New Windows 10 issue
Do the same problems occur on someone elses wifi.
If not then it sounds like an ISP problem.
And you must say
" I have tested on another known working wifi"
"I have also tested with known working computers"
That phrase stops them passing the buck.

Re: New Windows 10 issue
Hey Les, yeah, I see where you're going with that. It's maybe not "an ISP problem" as much as "ISP over-interference." They spot the questionable traffic (lots of fast image arrival from porn-image servers, f.e.) and therefore throw in an automated delay that throttles any outgoing DNS requests for a little bit of time; or something like that.
Well, if I work on it more, I'll let you know. Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: New Windows 10 issue
I'm not sure if this will help but in chrome you can get developer tools open by pressing Ctrl Shift I
and in there, there is a number of settings you can try like disabling cache and changing network throttling settings.
(for firefox its a new browser: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools)
You may also want to check your extensions on your browsers to make sure your web browsers are not being hijacked by malware.
Also you may want to check your router settings to make sure there isn't any security settings effecting your browsing, such as anti Ddos settings etc

Hi,
First of all great app, very handy.
One issue I noted was that I dragged the Server startup Jar to the windows 7 startup folder so that the server starts when windows is started. however this is when I noticed the Error inidcating about bluetooth not being available. my laptop is HP not Toshiba
I think the issue is that the server is trying to start befor the bluetooth drivers are loaded. If I kill the serve and restart the server after bluetooth has loaded, it works fine. Is there a way to delay the server start up?

When I was working as a Computer engineer
I found Glary Utilities very useful.
Also Bleeping Computer
As a free site for many obscure solutions
Now I am retired I have a mac.
