Old thread, but I wanted to showcase that I had to turn off my encryption settings in Pidgin to connect to the xmpp chat.

Under the advanced tab,

I had to:
set Connection Security to "Use Encryption if available" (formerly Require Encryption)
check the box "Allow plaintext auth over unecrypted ...

oh this isn't IRC... this is XMPP.. but i don't think the protocol is the issue.. i think it's the configuration of the server. it can't be the load, the chat doesn't see enough traffic for it to be a bonafide traffic ...
