Maybe you should train yourself to hold the edge. That'll help you better recognize how far you can go. To me it seems that you are either just not stopping soon enough on the last edge, or you are still on the edge without realizing it. It may seem strange, but you can be very close or even on the edge without feeling much of it. The moment you try to go for another edge then, you are pushing too far.

Also, keep in mind that sensitivity plays a very large role here. After edging several times you should be much more sensitive. This means that another edge will ramp up much faster then before. Consequently this also means you need to stop earlier then before as there is some overshoot. If not stopping soon enough is your problem, then you will see that when you try to stop earlier the sensation will still peak at the edge even if you think it won't.

Lastly I'd like to suggest trying the same repeated edging but slower. Try to stroke slowly to the edge, take a small break and repeat. The slower you go, the easier it is to find you limits.
