I know we have fans of one or the other and even both.
What are your loves and hates?

When the original "Star Trek" series started,
The following mornings Physics became more interesting.
Our teacher was a fan and integrated it into the syllabus.
I also remember going to Hammersmith to see
"Star Wars" Episodes 4, 5, and 6
Back to back in one evening, with my eldest daughter.

what about the point of the two shows?
Star Trek...
basic morals.. everyone regardless of race is equal (at least in theory)
we should respect all cultures as they are and try to understand them (not interfere)
death is a last resort (stun first if possible)... although most episodes.. death was what happened.
peaceful negotiations are preferred over violence.
Travel is supposed to be to learn, explore and understand.
Star Wars
large governments ruled by the few are bad/evil
democracy though flawed (within the series-not in general) is considered "good"
anger and hatred are evil
some connection and love of all living beings creates a positive /force
the biggest difference though is Star wars is basically a CLOSED system
there are no more planets worth exploring.. they may have been one forgotten worth revisiting.
How do we handle all the resources of a closed system?
there only so much ore.. food.. available..
so wars often break out over who has what resources.
Star treck is an OPEN system
there a LOT of places that are unknown, resources to be found...
Why is the Enterprise so low in the atmosphere, I mean besides the fact that her shields would be able to withstand the Laser based weapons on the death star, it would be highly dangerous for her to operate in such a low orbit. She would only be able to manoeuvre on thrusters, and the warp drive would have to be offline.
Ok i'm gonna stop now before I get uber nerd on you all.

If you watch "Mythbusters" you would know that Hollywood has its own laws of physics.
OR
"It's surprising what you can do when the script writer is on your side"

True that when writing fiction you can pretty much make up your own rules as to how your technology works, but once you have set those rules, it can be a little hard to change them. For example in Star Trek, if a ship goes to warp within the gravity well of a planet, your'e gonna see some serious shit. Couple that with how close the enterprise was to the earth and those storm troopers and it's destruction would likely have a similar effect to this.....
Star wars is a good movie and a good fantasy story. Star Trek is more like science fiction with not as much magic (force) and better explained and showed space-trip difficulties and detailes. Star trek is an exploration adventure-oriented thing. Star wars is more like a drama and it's focus is more on the heroes rather than on the exciting world around them.
All in all, I like Star Trek univerce more, but I love Star wars movie too. I wouldn't try to figure which one is better, because it will be like comparing football and hockey. Some similarities, lots of difference.

Never really got in touch with Star Wars. Havne't even seen all the movies although I'm a big fan of Science Fiction. Star Wars just doesn't do it for me ^^
Staarted watching the Original Series of Star Trek when I was about 9 or 10 years old I think. Ever since then I've been a fan of it
Seen all the Movies (the newest one is totally horrible , you just can't let them blow up Vulcan...), pretty much all the Series (except for the newest one again ). Even have DS9 and Voyager on DVD.
Me and my sister have around 150 Star Trek books at home....
Any more questions?

I too have been watching Trek since I was a young child, I would agree with others above that Star Wars is more of fantasy than a sci fi. But although Star Trek seems to focus on the science, the original at least is highly grounded in classical mythology with Episodes like Who mourns for Adonis, and Platos step children (both where the crew encounter descendants of ancient Greek gods.) being obvious links to this. And good old fashioned story telling, with episodes like Balance of Terror (which is clearly a naval warfare submarine drama) and straight dramas like The Conscience of the King where Kirk confronts a man who he believes is a mass murderer. What you have throughout the original series is the triumvirate of Kirk, McCoy and Spock. Which is where I would tend to disagree with you on the new film, I thought it pretty much captured the spirit of the original series and presented in a modern way. The destruction of Vulcan being a pivotal plot point in the movie, I can see it as a necessary occurrence. I look forward to seeing how they do with the follow up.
Star Wars is essentially a different kettle of fish. It is in essence a stand alone film. One story of Luke Skywalker running away from home and bringing down an Empire. It's a cracking story and a very entertaining film. However I am not one of these people who believes George Lucas when he says he had the whole thing planned out from the start, the two sequels (Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi) were only ever conceived after the first one became a massive success. The fact that Luke and Leia kiss passionately in the 2nd film kind of disproves this. Lucas only ever started spouting this stuff about the saga always being one story in his mind when the idea of the prequels was mooted in the early nineties, it was his way of justifying taking the story back, and we all know how that turned out. Star Trek was always an ongoing series about people breaking through the final frontier, Star Wars was a film about a young man slipping the bonds of youth and proving himself in the wide world. Aside from being set in or around space, they have very little else in common.
