Debate?

I am looking to practice my debating skills. So, I'm issuing an open challenge: I will debate any philosophical topic, and will take any side you wish. If anyone would like to participate, please post your preferred topic here, as well as which stance you would like to take (I will take an opposing stance). If multiple people are interested, I will consider doing more than one (one at a time though).

Once me and my not yet decided opponent have agreed on the specific wording for a topic, we can discuss the rules (word counts, time limits, etc.) And above all, everyone remember that this will be a DEBATE, not an ARGUMENT. So let's keep things civil.

It's on like Donkey Kong.... Let's each make a list of a few topics, then see if either of us have a large interest in one of the others topics?

Having met you in chat, I'm definitely not in your intellectual league Alliteration and noting your interest in philosophy, of which I know nothing, I fear I am not a sufficiently worthy opponent against whom you can hone your skills. Thus intimiated I won't, I'm afraid, be putting myself forward for the first round of such a debate. However, I salute your ingenuity in coming up with a potentially fascinating thread to follow. I will watch on with fascination and in awe as the debate evolves.

Humbly
Jack

While I applaud your desire to improve your debating skill, a skill I have found valuable in the past I would suggest that this might not be the perfect forum for such an event. I do have a suggestion though and you may take it or leave it as you wish, once long ago I needed a little bit of extra help from an English tutor and one of the things we did was to practise comparison/discussion essays.

Her twist on the matter was to make me compare the most bland, banal issues she could think of or issues with a tiny fragment of difference. When I could not manage it she would send me back to try it again, it was absolute torture at the time but it taught me some very valuable lessons. For instance the first one she set me was a 1000 words on the difference between skinned and unskinned sausages. I'm still haunted by that one.

It may help your debating skills to write such things out in a scripted or written format. Good look with your endeavour.

Hmm...I'm not sure that would help debating skills per se; but knowledge of the topic I'm writing about. If I wrote 1000 words on sausage, for example, I could see myself learning about differences in taste, texture, preparation, and cultural cuisine...but I'm not so sure it would improve my ability to defend anything in a debate - I'd just become a sausage expert

When i read your list, i would say the first point "existence of god" could be a good idea.

Edit: Hmm... maybe more chemical/biological topics... for example gene technology or something like that.^^

Do you mean as it pertains to ethics (ex. designer babies, human cloning)? That could work...
