Try using a depilatory, such as Nair. Use scissors to cut the growth back to short ones. Then use Nair and take a shower to wash it all off. If you missed some, you can use a razor to touch it up.

first off, i'm a guy. and it's a little different when shaving yourself vs a girl.
i'm not a Nair fan myself. i find a good steamy shower and clean new razor works best for me. use a conditioner or moisturizer before and after. that should help sooth any irritation. take your time, you don't want to rush "down there". just as shaving your legs or a beard, expect the first few times to be a little more sensitive then usual.
as for waxing.. YEAOOOWEE!!
i've never tried it, but i'm thinking the smoother she can be down there.. the more fun it will be for both.
good luck with that, and remember, lube is your friend. ; )

Mild irritation is expected the first couple of times that you shave, but whatever, do NOT shave your genital area daily. At most, shave it every five days, and use moisturizer, or else it might end up getting even more irritated. Also, if done right, your (insert sexual organ here) should be smooth for two to three days after you shave it.
Happy shaving!
