Depending on what the candle is made of, it will melt at different degrees.

One thing for sure is to not use those little birthday candles as they are not made of wax, but of plastic. They melt at a much higher temp.

Other than the birthday candles you can vary the degree of heat by adjusting the height of when the wax drops on the flesh.

you are correct, that there is special wax, at adult stores that burns at a lower temperature for safety purposes.
