Can't comment on your preferences per se, but one thing that I think all devices should have is a hinged main ring ... it sucks buying multiple sizes of rings to try and find the right size. Devices that have hinged rings make it easy to fit and wear, imho.
BTW what device are those black cages from/for?

Sounds like it never fit right. Most of the issue sounds like it from the ring being too tight. Also having a cage that it to big makes things worse. You need a cage that is snug when soft not hard.
