Well, it depends. A big one or one for the handbag? There are a lot of different breeds. I actually kind of like the "Havanese".

Energy level is another thing to think about. Want a calm dog or a dog that will constantly want to play?

Small and playful would be good. I need one that can match my energy level.

Also I have to mention that at first I thought this was a personal ad and you were specifically looking for a "furry" dog.

Boys are less cuddly.

In that case, I stay with the Havanese. They are always looking for attention and pretty much never leave your side. Which also means, they always need something to do.

Oh yes, it is better to get them as young as possible. Sadly I'm not from the DC, so can't help there.

Thanks boys! I ended up buying a house with a nice yard this summer, and decided I needed a big dog to protect me. I ended up adopting an English Mastiff from our local shelter. He's super sweet and cuddly, and his bark is certainly worse than his bite.

My bite on the other hand...
