Uk internet censorship

first let me start of by saying that i don't know if this topic has come up before, if it has then sorry

so recently the british government has gone on some kind of internet censorship "crusade".

now they have announced that filters will be introduced, which means that some fat, lazy government type who doesn't know the first thing about what hes doing will get the power to decide what sites are good or bad.

this is opt in however it will be enabled by default so if you opt out it could make you look bad or like a pervert. this will also give them the power to monitor everything we do online legitimately with an excuse for doing it although funnily enough that part isn't mentioned much.

sorry about the rant but this is wrong and immoral on so many levels and is a first step towards communist style internet censorship.

we have a right to freedom and anonymity on the internet and this is being removed by a corrupt government who exaggerates existing threats such as that of pedophilia to restrict perfectly legal use of the internet.

i understand that pedophilia is a disgusting and highly real threat and i agree that they should be punished but the government should spend more time hunting them down and less time trying to censor everything.

that is like locking down the whole of london and arresting every citizen to catch one petty thief.

once again sorry for the rant but this is something i feel very strongly about and that will effect all uk users of milovana.

I strongly encourage people to start using proxies and VPN as soon as possible anyway, for a number of reasons - censorship being just one of them. It also makes perfect sense to fight general surveillance and data collection that ordinary people in the street should not have to put up with.

I share your concern and i also think in light of the NSA scandal, that the uk government is sneaking in a surveillance project in under the disguise of "its to stop pedophiles" , its worrying to think where this may lead, and i have no idea what a proxy is or how to set one up , maybe i best start learning.

Most of the censorship is implemented as simple DNS entry removals, making the lookup from site name to its IP address fail.

The simplest solution to THAT problem is using a DNS server other than the ones your ISP is giving you. For example google's DNS at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

When it comes to proxy or VPN (I'd recommend the latter), there are tons of decent providers out there. It is not free, but it is cheap, and the best protection you can get. Obviously, still things you do and say on the net can be traced back to you in other ways, such as account login / email address etc if you are not operating as a guest, but at least your traffic is fully encrypted and untraceable when going through your ISP - which is where most of the surveillance happens.
