I have been informed that there are some more rules

I am not sure how official they are.

How do we feelabout discusing the "dnagerous" topics of
Religion
or
Politics

What are these new rules? Surely if they were official there would have been an thread in the announcements section?

Personally, I feel like anything should be allowed to be discussed. Freedom of speech and all that, excluding hate speech or any form of bullying.

It would seem contradictory to allow "off-topic" non-sexual chats about, e.g. coffee, music and (eurgh) football while disallowing friendly (or at least non-aggressive) political and religious discussion.

I actually Need to know..
this is an honest question.

There is nothing in here about subject or topics that are off the table in the chat room. However I would go with common sense here and if there is something going on in the room like a scene or even just a general discussion about the flavours of cheese, then it's best just to join in with the conversation, or in the case of a scene watch from the sidelines etc.

But aren't you a chat moderator? shouldn't any new rules have been discussed in the moderator forum?

On the subject of chat and scenes etc. Whenever I go in (rare admittedly) there never seems to be anything going on. Often there is just a list of people and no activity, no discussions, nothing. It's as if people log into the thing and then go off and have a cup of tea away from the computer or something.

Pretty much why I don't bother to go in there anymore myself.

On the subjects of politics and religion...personally, I don't have a problem discussing those things with people I know, but I also understand that there are quite a few people who take these two particular subjects WAY too personally. Opposing view points quickly degenerates into a "you're stupid...no, you're stupid" kind of bickering match which doesn't serve much purpose.

While I think we should be free to discuss them if we like, they are going to be a touchy subject with most people and flame wars are likely. If that's something the mods are prepared to deal with in an objective manner, then that's fine, but I'd probably try to stay away from those topics in a general chat room because I don't really know the people in there.

As a Moderator I do not disallow any chats of any kind. There is no rule stating any subject is off limits, unless the subject matter is illegal or breaks terms of service with the site. On the subject of politics/religion I won't stop it unless it becomes an insult match between all involved or if one person is only saying things to rile up a group of people ie, troll. This is my criteria for how I handle these subjects.

I try to get some semblence of something going when I'm there, but *shrugs* people don't want to join in, or it dies down as soon as I stop being directly involved.

One can only do so much before getting bored and tired.

I don't understand. Who informed you that there were more rules? Surely you can ask other moderators or members of the team to clarify whether they're official or not. Why ask us? I'm not saying this to be unhelpful, I just find this a bit strange.

I'd be happier if there were MORE discussions of these topics - I tend not to get involved in chats because as far as I've seen they're never 'about' anything - people just say hi, how are you etc.., and then some newbie who doesn't understand the rules pops in and asks if anyone would like to domme him, he gets shut down, more people turn up, people say hi, the cycle continues...

but that's just me, and that may be just the times I've gone in, I am in England so I doubt Im around at the liveliest times.

There is no new rule against discussing politics or religion in chat and a rule of that sort has never existed to my knowledge.

It is in no way a formal rule of chat, you're under no official obligation to restrain yourself from discussing the topics of politics or religion in chat. However social convention and politeness sway in the direction that that we restrain ourselves from discussing political and religious issues in an open forum or among those who may not welcome such debate.

I simply ask you to be empathetic for those who do not wish to be part of or be present when such conversations are taking place. In many parts of the world it's considered a faux pas to discuss politics among those unfamiliar in fear of offense or alienation of others present. They are sensitive topics for many people and when people are just trying to relax and have fun, it's not a fun thing to read especially when you have differing views and are in no mood to debate.

While yes, you maintain your freedom of speech and have the right to say whatever you please without causing harm to others, those kinds of discussions do tend to be confined to separate areas on many sites and in real life for good reason.

I have no empathy for those who have no interest in having their beliefs challenged, or become offended when they are. "Sensitive" topics are the ones we should be discussing most often, not least. Social convention can fuck itself.

Surely the definition of faith is upholding your belief even when it is challenged? That's what always annoys me about the whole "Let's prove God is real" debate. If we could prove the existence of a higher power then there would be no such thing as faith. So I do agree that people who have faith should be strong enough to bat away challenges to their belief. But I do see why people get offended, especially by more fervent atheists like Dawkins. He seems to get so annoyed by the fact that people believe in God when all the science says otherwise. He's missing the point. If I had faith I think I would get pretty annoyed if someone got into a discussion with me and simply refused to accept that is what I believe. After all that's what faith is about, it's not about proof.

Well my point got away from me a bit there. But in short some people have a tendency to go over the top when they challenge someone's belief. You can discuss beliefs very easily without being disrespectful.
