Missing 50 pages

Well, I hope you can help, because I'm pretty frustrated. I'm working on a new tease in the Nyx. And it was 125 pages long - I had about 20 to go. I took a break, and when I came back, the Nyx was acting pretty crazy - freezing, not showing all of my pages, duplicate pics in the media section.

Well, I was concerned, because not all of my pages were showing up. But then I looked at the script, and they were still there. So I figured it was just a problem with viewing them. So, I refreshed my cache and tried to load it again. Same thing.

I had figured out a way to work around the pages not showing up - it still played right in the preview - but I thought I'd refresh my cache and try one more time. This time my pages disappeared from the script as well.

So, am I out 50 pages? And is there a size limit that I should be aware of? Or can you tell me what's up?

Please let me know.

Matt

Well, Nyx does not limit the number of pages, but Flash limits the number of interface elements. Currently Nyx loads a copy of the page editor for every page. I know now that this is a major design flaw. (I once tried to open House of Tease 2 with it's well over two hundred pages and it just crashed Flash.) Fortunately it's fixable of course, by changing the editor so that it uses only one copy of the page editor and loads the pages into it. With that fix the limit will be in the area of 10000 pages, which I'm pretty sure will be enough for most authors. :-)

Now, as for your case...

I'm very, very sorry to tell you that if the pages disappeared from the script they are indeed gone. :weep:

You loaded the tease, because of the memory limit the editor didn't load all pages, by hitting the preview button you saved the tease in the incomplete version and ... well that's what we're left with now.

I know this advice comes too late, but Nyx is beta software. It means that us, the developers are certain that most features won't work yet and that it is very likely that there are some major bugs, some of them even known (like this one). So if you do create teases that are that sophisticated you should keep local backups. (I.e. copy the script into a text file and save it on your hard drive.)

I feel with you, I really do. A hole in the wall reminds me. I recently lost five pages of a university paper due to a power outage at the exact second I was saving my file. (What are the odds? :shit:) I'm normally known as a calm person, but at that moment I threw a filled plastic water bottle across the room. Hence the hole. I was really pissed. You never write it the same way again. Hmm, thinking about it now, the second version was probably better. But still, argh. :wall:

One question: What time was it when you saved the script (with all pages)? If your break was long enough then our server might have made a backup. (We do two backups a day, so it's a long shot, but well, you never know.)

lol, you fucking lucky bastard, I think it did create a copy...

I'll restore it for you. :-D

Not the end of the world

My break was ... I wanna say 7:30 - 10:30.

Mind you, it's not the end of the world. I can redo those pages. I only wish I'd gone ahead and published it instead of adding on a few extras. I mean, it was pretty much complete - I just wanted to add a couple of side plots.

The thing with the editor - will that be fixed soon? I'm thinking I'll just wait.

While I've got your ear, I'd love some file management. I love being able to upload my pics in batches, but I'm losing so much time hunting for files it's hardly worth it. File folders, the ability to move pics around, or even if they just automatically arranged alpha-numerically, would be soooo helpful.

Thanks,

Matt

Ok, it's restored. Now here's some instructions:

1. Open it in Nyx and do not click anything except *exactly* what I tell you to.
2. Go to the script tab.
3. Click Save.
4. Close Nyx.

Your tease is now fully restored with all 125 pages. Now to prevent the same thing from happening again, DO NOT OPEN IT IN NYX ANYMORE UNTIL WE FIX THE BUG. I'll let you know once we do. Expect early January.

Man, I'm so glad I could rescue that tease for you.

Well, folders were planned originally, but turned out to be really, really complicated, because every command like rename folder etc. has to programmed for the client and for the server and then has to be tested, made secure etc, etc.

Sorting of files of course will be pretty easy to do, in fact let me just put that on the todo list. I'm also planning to add a filter feature, so you can type like "ale" and you'd see all images that start with that, like "alessandra1.jpg, alessandra2.jpg, alex1.jpg, etc." If you combine that with a prefix feature, so you can say "prefix all images I'm going to upload now with karen_bath" that should have pretty much the same organizing power as folders.

Edit: Oh and you *always* have my ear. I read every single post in the suggestion forum and in the Nyx thread, so if you ever have any more requests or ideas, spit it out. We rely on this feedback, because even if we have a feature on the todo list already it will still get done much sooner if many people ask for it.

Done. And I copied the script, too.

Thank you very much.

By the way, I think I owe you an apology. Back in June I got kinda bent out of shape during the whole Tease of the Month thing. In a way it was good, because I realized some things about myself. Anyway, my apologies for just ditching and not saying anything.

No worries. I've always maintained a policy of come & go. If someone is gone, for whatever reason, maybe something happened in real life, or they've lost interest or need to get their affairs in order that's always fine with me. I see every post, every new tease, every new mail as a gift. I don't think about whether there will be a sequel.
