Just to put the word out if it's not already, I seem to have been unable to get into the chatbox again. Connecting | | | but no connection, like the other day when this thread was last active. I'll try again now.

My apologies in advance for barging in with unsolicited tech support. I've noticed the chatbox seems so fall over fairly regularly although I don't know why that may be. This may possibly help but you probably already know all this about AIAX Chat.

I've been running phpBB forums for 5 years and use the Blueimp AJAX Chat which installs almost transparently over phpBB ... as I imagine the current chatbox also does.

The site for downloads is http://frug.github.io/AJAX-Chat/ and the phpBB3 .ZIP and .TAR.GZ files are:

https://github.com/Frug/AJAX-Chat/archi ... phpbb3.zip - (537,614 bytes)
https://github.com/Frug/AJAX-Chat/archi ... bb3.tar.gz - (428,451 bytes)

IT'S FREE in both the meanings of price and freedom.

Extract and copy the files into the /phpBB/ajax/ directory and it can be tested alongside the current one in the /phpBB/chat/ directory. 1.3Mb when installed.

Very simple to setup and not hard to customise bits and pieces so I've found. Change smilies, add HTML, change refresh times are easy.

One major concern is the RAM usage for MySQL. It is fairly RAM hungry IMO and uses around 200Mb to run, plus around 40-50Mb per user, so 1Gb RAM will allow around 15 users before it starts to get squeezy. 2Gb server RAM would handle all the users I've seen here at busy times so far, which was 23 the other night.

Just a suggestion in case there is something about the current chat software causing problems.

I'm currently unable to log in to chat. It looks like an authentication problem, as it tries to connect but then throws an authentication failed message and the login dialog.

It may be just me, but Milovana as a whole appears to be running slow at the moment.

Milovana as a whole seems to be having issues. I had that issue for a while until I finally got in. It seems to be an issue with the server that handles authentication (whether using a client or chat from the site) being high latency right now, so not responding. We'll just have to wait til the issue with Milo as a whole clears up, or you get lucky

We're running an XMPP server. Our biggest issue is the server software has a small memory leak occasionally. We're also running on a system with under 400MB of free ram to use. Basically between MySQL and the chat server we fill up all the ram there's to use without a lot of spare overhead. So the system auto kills the largest process (chat) if we run out of ram... We've only had one large crash in the history of using this new system and it was do to a database crashing. So the suggestion might not work well given it's RAM heavy reqs

Thanks for the explanation, Turtle. The site seems to be responding better overall now, and I was also able to get into chat. :-)

Chat's not down currently. Not sure if there's any issues in terms of the authentication server right now for it not letting you back
