No offense, but the whole 'plays anything' from VLC is just marketing nonsense. I tried it out once....can't remember specifics for sure, but there's a lot it doesn't play. Seem to recall it had trouble with gifs even. There are a whole load of media players that make no such 'anything' claims that play a lot more than VLC. It's a claim that'd annoy me anyways because media player shouldn't make much difference to what you can play, it's what codecs you've got. Also had some horrible usability problems for me, but imagine they got fixed by now. I don't know BS player, but if mplayer can't manage it....It's a hardware thing I'm sure, IIRC some mp4 stuff give trouble to older graphics cards. Thanks for the recommendations, but the player ain't the problem.

I seem to have done almost nothing but moan this whole thread, don't mean to, I appreciate the effort, honest :)

If your computer can't run a video file that even my cellphone can, perhaps it's time for you to upgrade some hardware?

By the way. Gifs are image files. Not video. So I'm not amazed that a Video player has hard time viewing them. Try your web browser next time.

On a PC (can't speak for Macs) that is otherwise healthy, VLC will handle anything you throw at it. If it doesn't, your problem is elsewhere. Also, VLC's claims don't have much to do with with marketing, since VLC is freeware, which is usually a good indicator that they're not trying to sell you anything.

Codecs also don't have anything to do with VLC. The whole point of VLC is that it doesn't require external codecs--all of the number crunching required for playback is handled inside the program.

My computer has no video codecs at all, and I can play all of these filetypes with no difficulty whatsoever.

It's not my place to tell you what media player to use, but your reasons for avoiding VLC were...spurious...to say the least

It would have been there already, but the online video player did not recognise the codecs, so I need to convert it and reupload again. Might require some patience :)

Definitely, though it is this specific codec, not overall bitrate. :)

I kinda expect a media player to play all major media formats. Even WMP takes gifs...ya shouldn't need to open a web browser to see an image...

Perhaps 'marketing' isn't the right term, but I know what I mean....it's a phrase that's in the public consciousness. Every time VLC comes up, it's that phrase that comes out...this stuff bugs me is all, vague stereotypes/catchphrases that get into the public consciousness, repeated by people who really have no idea of the accuracy/not, just repeating the same...erm...hype isn't the right word. Slogan...perception...soundbite...I bet the Germans have a word for it. A few years back it was the same with Firefox vs IE....a refusal to accept that IE was the more stable product by firefox fanboys, evidence irrelevant...it was like.....some token of faith, microsoft=corporate=evil=must suck. Nowadays, it's "firebug", and if the latest firefox has less problems than chrome, the same people would refuse to acknowledge it, because in their head, firefox=buggy.


Every video (except mebe there's some specialist lossless original format that uses what may not technically be considered a codec, I don't know) requires a codec. If your computer can play a video, it has a codec that can work it.

VLC comes with a variety of video codecs, which I guess gives it good results for putting it on a fresh linux box or something, to watch a dvd....but it's not any kind of magical non codec player, most players come with inbuilt codec libraries. Its' codec pack is better than what you get standard on windows...but as I said, it actually plays less than other free media players. Even limited to video, no way will any media player (and certainly not VLC) take 'anything'....I think you fundamentally don't understand digital video encoding.

Sorry to go off topic on one, ya know how it is....you go online to look up porn, but despite best intentions end up distracted by technical information....back to large bouncing breasts :)

Wow, Coder, you should really check into rehab for whatever is destroying your brain cells.

I have hundreds of gigs of video files, of varying formats and encodings, that I've collected over the years. The amount of them that VLC will not play adds up to a whopping zero. There's no hype, there's no B.S. to it. It will literally play any video file that someone can throw its direction. For you to claim that it can't and that people are deluded in thinking so by pointing out that it can't display something that isn't even a video file, just shows that you're either completely misunderstanding things, or you're purposely trying to start arguments because you like watching the drama the ensues.

So, for anyone looking for a media player, download the VLC Player. It works better than anything else out there. I've never seen a single complaint about it, aside from the above nutty rant. Seriously, it will do what you want and it's free. Windows Media Player is free, but it won't do everything you want it to without wasting a lot of time searching for missing codecs.

Coder, I want to apologize for starting this...it seems to have snowballed into something very close to outright hostility against you over something completely inconsequential.

Also, on rereading, my original post has something of a condescending tone, which was definitely not called for, so I'm sorry for that as well.

I may disagree with your reasons for not using VLC, but if something else works better for you, that's cool. The whole point of a community like Milovana is to avoid casting judgment on other people's quirks.
